What's Going on in the US House of Representatives?

What was up with all the bellyaching from the Left about the Republicans not having a speaker for a while as the world is in crisis and chaos. “The House needs a speaker Right Now! “ they clamored. So the Republicans finally elected their new speaker and got back to business and voted for aid to Israel that was offset by spending. Well, what is with all the foot dragging now? I thought there was a sense of urgency? Apparently not. It was just whining and bellyaching about a non crisis that there wasn’t a speaker right away. Thought so.

Get Ready for the Next Round; Republican House Dysfunction Continues

"House Republican leaders were forced to abruptly pull two year-long spending bills from the floor this week amid opposition from both ends of their badly divided GOP conference. And Johnson is still grappling with a strategy to keep the government’s lights on without sparking a right-wing rebellion, with the current funding patch set to expire in eight days – an all too familiar dynamic for Republican leadership." Speaker Johnson in no Rush to Impeach Biden

"WaPo’s Jacqueline Alemany reports today that Johnson has taken a more reserved tone toward the investigation, suggesting in a meeting this week with GOP centrists 'that there is insufficient evidence at the moment to initiate formal impeachment proceedings.'” (Source)

Still no sense of urgency apparently:
The Republicans have failed to advance a spending bill that has a reasonable expectation of passing, not only their own caucus, but the House at large. If no bill is adopted, or no continuing resolution, the government will shut down in 7 days. The Republican response? The House is in recess.

You're right. Still no sense of urgency. It seems the Republicans WANT to shut down the government. They may well do that, but they'll pay a price on Election Day if they do.

I thought the “world is on fire”? And there had to be a speaker in place immediately to deal with it? The House voted on a stand alone funding bill for Israel, yet it just sits there while Biden and the Senate Dems stall.

No one in this forum said anything about the world being on fire. Mischaracterization.

I said the House Republicans were in a self-made leadership crisis. I said the Republican caucus was dysfunctional. I said the Republican House caucus can't govern. Electing a speaker did little to change any of that, it seems.

In other words, it would be nice if they did the job they were elected to do instead of bring the institution to a halt because they cannot agree on someone to serve as speaker.

This is especially desirable as Israel reels from a totally unexpected attack, an attack that is so destabilizing that nations worldwide are reviewing their positions regarding Israel after what is being called Israel's 911. Just as much changed in the US and worldwide after our 911, much will change in Israel and worldwide after these attacks.

At a time when much of great consequence is in flux worldwide , it would be nice if House Republicans could get their s_ _ t together enough to at least give the world a sense that the US government is functional.

And the House voted on a bill regarding Israel, yet Biden and senate Dems stall. What’s this about being functional again?

Virtually the entirety of the democrats and a significant minority of the republicans. That's what's wrong.

Producing a nonsense bill they know will not pass is functional for theatrical purposes only. It does nothing to help Israel. If you want to help Israel, pass a clean bill that helps Israel. Not a bill that defunds the IRS as a condition of helping Israel.

That's so irresponsible: To just keep spending money without offsetting it.

The Israel bill does not defund the IRS. It takes proposed additional, excessive funds that would've gone to the IRS and diverts them to funding Israel's defense. Aid to our only middle eastern ally should not be tied to aid for Ukraine; they're in no way related. It also avoids printing more money we don't have. Biden and the Democrats are stalling this one for partisan reasons as a sop to the far left Palestinian supporters.

One other dynamic is in play during these House proceedings that the media refuse to address or even recognize: Democrat party unity against anything the Republicans propose. With the slim majority the GOP holds, they must have nearly every one of their votes to pass anything. It only takes a handful of dissenters to stall passage because the leadership knows that not one Democrat will break ranks to pass anything the GOP proposes unless it meets their conditions 100%. If only a few Democrats would compromise, bills would pass. But they would rather stonewall as a unit, then claim bills don't pass because the Republicans are "dysfunctional". Meanwhile, the Democrats are in perfect harmony - as obstructionists.

Isn't it reassuring how certain responses from certain individuals confirm without any trace of doubt that one is absolutely correct. Bless their hearts.

It looks like Speaker Johnson has proposed a reasonable "laddered" CR that would keep the government open for business and "avert the possibility of a large omnibus spending bill being considered just before Christmas". Of course there are a few hard-liners in his party that insist on getting their way all the time, but even some Democrats agree with this idea in principle. Now if a few of them will vote for the greater good, we might see real compromise.

Speaker Johnson got his bill passed; govt shutdown avoided.

"It passed 336 to 95, well over the two-thirds margin it needed to get the measure over the line. Just two Democrats voted against the bill, along with 93 Republicans"

Pretty good for a right-wing extremist. Way to go, Maga Mike!

More than a few "hardliners" voted against "MAGA Mike." Ninety three House Republicans voted against the measure, with 127 voting for it. The "hardliners" are not happy. How long will it be before they turn on "MAGA Mike," a speaker who cannot govern without cooperating with the Democrats?

When McCarthy did the very same thing MAGA Mike did, the hardliners used the motion to vacate the chair to boot him out of the speaker's seat. What keeps them from doing that now? Honeymoon period? If so, how long will that last? If not, what is the reason he still has his seat?

Have the dysfunctional ways of the House Republicans suddenly and miraculously been cured?
