Been in a van since 2001 out here and this morning was my first level 3 inspection. I was coming out of a port in portsmouth va. and they were running all cmv's over the portables. I pull on officer asked me what my gvwr is and my fawr and rawr is, I opened the door and looked down at the tag and told him. "I know what my gvwr is in my head but I never remember my axle weights". He then asked if I am loaded I told him no I just unloaded at the port. He tells me that I am only 300 lbs under my fawr and to pull over and someone will be with me shortly.

Officer came over and asked if I have ever had a roadside inspection on my truck, I told him no I have not had any roadsides since I got out of a big truck. He tells we to show all paperwork and what not for the van and me, and asks for my dl,twic and log book.
I hand him over everything and tell him that I only run a log book for irs purposes but it is accurate and it is here on my laptop.

Well passed my level 3, then he told me that I keep a nice log even though I do not have to. I told him that even though I am in this van I still follow the hos.

So the point of the story is it don't matter what you drive. It can happen to anyone. It does not bother me one bit that they wanted to inspect me I have nothing to hide and I keep a well maintained van, and a accurate log book. Y'all be safe out there.

P.s. I am only under 300 lbs on my steer because I am fat, have a roof mount a/c along with a sleeper and a wonderfully heavy d-max in this van.

I thought it was odd, but they were getting all of us on the way out of port. They were set up in the truck only exit lanes. I know i need my twic to get in and out of the port so i had it handy and i guess every other driver did to because there is no way in with out one. Atleast at the truck entrance. I also did notice that there was 2 customs/border vehicles in the little pull off were we got inspected.

Why would they ask for your twic card?
..... because he just came out of a port ? (..... although seems odd that DOT would be asking for it, as opposed to Homeland Security ..... "your papers please ...")

Yea I got the port thing first off but if I am crossing the border and I get pulled over by NY SP, and they ask for my FAST card, I have to ask why, they don't enforce customs laws.

Greg the only thing I can think of is that we were still on the ports property. Being that there were 2 customs suv's there maybe they were doing something with them. I have not a clue and I do not question enforcement officers "unless they are accusing me of something I did not do" I learned my lesson when I drove a big truck. Keep yo mof shut and things go alot smoother.

It's good to see you back 60MPH. You have a lot of good advice to offer about the expedite business. Glad to see that you are still alive and kicking out there.

Could it be because certain lanes are restricted to FAST vehicles and they wanted to make sure you weren't making unauthorized use of the lane ?
