Found a 2004 Ford F650 with an 18' ft. body w/barn doors, 108"tall, 102" wide. has 2 rows of e-trac, load dollies, a 72" stand-up sleeper, sleeper has a microwave. Air ride suspension and seats 6.0L turbocharged diesel 230HP @ 2100rpm, w/Allison 2400 4-speed automatic trans. 229,000 miles, GVW 26000. Would this be considered a "C" unit and would many companies be interesed in putting it on. Would they be more interested in a 22-24' box? Also does anyone any input on the Ford 6.0L engine, just wondering about the reliability and pulling power. Price is about $27000, but is negotible. Any info would be appreciated. Thanks, Tom.

In general, a larger box will provide you more load opportunities. Keep in mind I know nothing about your specific truck in your post, but I would have concerns about a 4 speed tranny. If running regional it may be ok, but as a OTR truck I would be concerned about what fuel milage it gets. For that, a 5 or 6 speed would be more compatible.
Not sure if I helped you or not?

Will companies take it and can it do the job? I'd say yes to both questions however I'd never consider it for myself or to put a driver in. There will be disagreement with at least some of this but my reasons are, in no particular order:

underpowered at 230hp and unknown torque
poor transmission choice with 4sp auto, that sounds like a city truck drivetrain not a highway truck
awkward size as a really large C but unable to qualify as a D

For a little more you could have a full D unit spec truck. If you want a C unit you can probably find one with better specs for the long haul, as it were. Good luck.

I would not get it.

First thing is 6.0 is too small for 19K. 7.3's had to struggle as it is, 6.0 will do more work reguardless.

Second is that it is a first generation 6.0 - talk to any Ford dealer and many should say stay away and give you very specific reasons.

I had a great oppertunity to buy a 2004 650 and passed on it. When I drove it with a load on it, car parts the owner left in it, it seemed to be sluggish. This had a 5 speed or 6 speed manual - so I would assume the 2400 would even be more sluggish.

Thanks guys for all the info, I appreciate your advice. Pretty much echos the opinion I got from one our co. mechanics, ok for local but not OTR. What would be the min. hp you would want in a "D" unit, are automatics more cost effective than a manual 6-speed? Thanks again, Tom:D
