TRANSIT WOES

I am not a gearhead (although I an quite good looking) but I am at a loss trying to understand what is wrong with my T350

At 2000 RPM I feel a shudder that goes away when next shift point hits. My first thought was Torque Converter (again?) which was replaced less than 50,000 miles ago. Now at 275,000.

Mechanic sort of ruled that out, for now, BUT when put on the scope ALL cylinders are misfiring all the time. Note that I have replaced coil packs & plugs twice already, which I do at every 100,000 mile service. Mechanic is scratching his head.

Any thoughts?

If it's missing all the time you would have a blinking check engine light ! Unfortunately a shift shudder could very well be a torque converter AGAIN ! Or a shift solenoid inside the transmission . Also is this a ford dealer and if not what scan tool does he have ?

No check engine issue. Snap on scan tool. Clearly shows image of misfiring. Cam position sensor is suspect, as well as fuel injector programming? He is a well established mechanic and transmission specialist. He is talking to Ford?? It will probably end up at Ford next week anyhow

Images of misfiring? Do you have more data? Cam sensor would cause increased time from key to start as the system attempts to adapt timing , fails then uses fail safe Timing . Fuel injector programming can only be changed via a ReFlash or failure of the PCM entirely . OBD II is required to illuminate the check engine light anytime there is an emission changing failure within the engine . It's also required to blink rapidly on its detection on multiple engine misfires. Based on the limited data your presenting this could be a powertrain control failure. Our vans have several modules controlling every aspect . A VERY simplistic hierarchy would be Powertrain and transmission at the top and several subsystems below . There is however an intermediate between the powertrain and transmission controller that could cause communication issues leading to failed torque converter lockup and load monitoring between the 2. I.e. The van thinks it needs more power when you in fact are slowing down or stumbling with the opposite scenario. Fords IDS scan tool is the ONLY scanner out there that can directly communicate with said intermediate ! Sorry the name is eluding me this evening .

Source of information : owning controlling interest in a garage for 13+ years . Being an Avid tuning hobbyist since 2003 including manipulating both my F150 ecoboost and my wife's Lincoln MKS.
For the sake of your sanity seriously ask your guy what year his scan tool is updated to... they release software updates every 6 months for many INCLUDING snap on . Those updates cost around a grand every time and lots of garages attempt communication using a "generic OBD II " protocol to save a buck and it just cant do the job our trucks yet !

Also I am not in anyway trying to doubt your mechanic I'm just basing this off my experience and what I have found through troubleshooting and tinkering .

And I get the possible PCM cause, as early on, but out of warranty, I had a failed CCM, and these modules make stuff go wacky. See, that's my technical knowledge kicking in - "go wacky".

Every Ford Transit owner I've talked to has had nightmares of a van that is unreliable, and is always having mechanical issues. How is it possible to make a living with such a horrible vehicle. Dodge, Sprinters also have their issues. Since the Econoline is isn't made anymore, there isn't any reliable crago van out their anymore except the not as good GMC

Canadian Bed Bugs ....

My parents had a 1965 Econline stub nose pickup on the farm ... 6cyl. 3 on tree ... hauled hogs and cattle in back and kept on running ... only fault ... gas gauge Never worked ... had to log miles so wouldn't run empty

my Poking sticks are donated by OVM Mfg. of Bison , SD.

Broad spectrum statements like this drive me CRAZY ! Transit is the #1 cargo vehicle on earth right now . Like any mass produced vehicle it'll have bugs and our livelihood has tendencies to bring out the best of them. Mercedes Sprinters, Ram Promasters, Econolines, and Express vans all have woes that can be found in the Bowels of this forum and others . Early adopters face even more challenges as manufacturing issues are being worked out ! The biggest mouths are the ones with troubles or not following proper maintenance and wondering why things fall apart . WOM has had some bumps as have I and others with our Transits our post our to EDUCATE. Only time will judge how they really turn out it's still far to early to tell!

End rant
