Why did Trump have these classified US documents at Mar-a-lago ?

What were his reasons to illegally remove the documents - which don't belong to him and, in fact, are United States property - to his personal abode after he left office ?
Who says he illegally took them ? If they was declassified by trump then they were re classified under biden....I wonder when the reclassification happened....

Yup handed back only after trump said something publicly.

Wrong again:

Trump posted about it on Truth Social @ 13:22 on Monday, August 15th.

Trump's own spokesperson posted an email - from DOJ informing him that the passports would be returned - that was timestamped on Monday August 15th @ 10:49 AM.

Just to be clear: 10:49 AM is before 13:22 (which 1:22 PM)

Muttly even posted it.

They could have just got a subpoena for the documents, but they chose the most intrusive method possible instead.

DOJ sent down Jay Bratt - the Chief of the Counterintelligence and Export Control Section (CES) of the National Security Division - personally in June or July or something.

And Trump still didn't turn over all that he was required to under the law.

In fact, his lawyer - Evan Corcoran - even told DOJ (in writing I believe) that Trump no longer had any US government property (docs)

So Evan Corcoran has legal exposure as well ... for lying to the Feds ... unless he throws Trump under the bus by claiming Trump lied to him.

Trump said he declassified the documents.
Democrats say biden reclassified the documents.
So WHEN were the documents reclassified.
The fbi had nearly 2 years to get ALL of the documents.....why now? Is it because trump might go up for reelection?

So what? The media was claiming Trump was lying that the Keystone Kops didn’t have the passports, which they did. Maybe the “news” media should get better sources and not believe everything the regime tells them.

So what? Get a another subpoena and have a judge sign off on it compelling him to turn over the specific documents in question.

If that is so, then-president Trump was free to declare the documents in question declassified without offering any proof. His statement is enough.

So too, then, with Biden. He does not need to offer anything more than a statement that he re-classified the documents in question the instant Biden took office.
That's not correct. Biden (or any other president) can only wave a magic wand and declare a previously declassified document as reclassified only if two things are true: one, the information that was declassified must not have been released publicly; and two, the declassification happened automatically.

All classified documents have a classification shelf life. Some documents have an explicit declassification date printed right on the document, say, 5 years, or whatever, if the Classification Authority (President, Vice-President, Agency heads, and others delegated to do so by the same) deems such a date is reasonable and warranted. All others have a 25 year shelf life that ends Dec 31st on the 25th year of classification. There are some exceptions to the 25 years, such as if a document would reveal confidential human sources, enable people to build or use WMD, reveal war plans still in effect, compromise cryptography, would damage US-Foreign relations, and other basic national security things.

But, for example, if an agency head, or, say, a former president intentionally declassified a document, that's a bell that cannot be unrung, unless all of the information released can reasonably be recovered. A new president can certainly reverse a previous president's executive orders by penning a new executive order, but he (or she) can't reclassify something that was intentionally declassified by an individual.

In the case of reclassification of automatically declassified materials, the same process to re-classify them still has to be followed (marking the documents, registering the documents, etc.). The president can't just deem them classified and not communicate that to others (because if someone doesn't know they've been reclassified, they might release it to the public).

As far as I know, and I could be wrong, the last time a president updated the rules on classification was Junior Bush in 2003.

Why did Trump have these classified US documents at Mar-a-lago ?
Because the GSA boxed them up and sent them there.
What were his reasons to illegally remove the documents - which don't belong to him and, in fact, are United States property - to his personal abode after he left office ?
Loaded question fallacy. The question assumes Trump himself removed the documents, or explicitly ordered or directed their removal, and knew he was breaking the law when he did so.

Trump said he declassified the documents.
Democrats say biden reclassified the documents.

Well, since we ARE all talking about "magical powers" ...

:tearsofjoy:

So WHEN were the documents reclassified.

According to Kash they didn't need to be reclassified ... since they were never actually declassified in the first place:

:tearsofjoy:

For all those clamoring for subpoenas, you got my vote for that one !

:tearsofjoy:

The fbi had nearly 2 years to get ALL of the documents.....why now?

Maybe because it took them some time to find or figure it out ... and they finally got tired of getting jerked around for nearly two years by the Orange Moron ?

Is it because trump might go up for reelection?

Probably not.

Well ... it certainly refutes Dan's recent (incorrect) claim that DOJ didn't act to return the passports until Trump squealed like a stuck pig in public about it.

Fact is, DOJ had already acted to do so prior to Trump saying anything publicly and had informed Trump's team.

Which is probably how El Trumpo found out.

:tearsofjoy:

The media was claiming Trump was lying that the Keystone Kops didn’t have the passports, which they did.

So what ?

:tearsofjoy:

Maybe the “news” media should get better sources and not believe everything the regime tells them.

Who says it was "the regime" ?

For all we know it could have been some right-winger source in the DOJ ... feeding misinformation to the media, just to try and make them look bad.

Yup - you are wrong - it was Obama in 2009, in Executive Order 13526:

The President Executive Order 13526

Trump never bothered to issue his own EO on classification apparently ... probably because as his former CoS John Kelly said: Trump "... didn't believe in the classification system ..."

John Kelly: Trump ‘didn’t believe in the classification system’

Trump knew he (Trump) knew best.

Morons are always the smartest guys in the room ... ;)

No, sorry ... that don't fly.

Nice deflection though.

Loaded question fallacy. The question assumes Trump himself removed the documents, or explicitly ordered or directed their removal, and knew he was breaking the law when he did so.

It's a law and a legal requirement that Presidential records be transferred to NARA.

Who's responsibility is it to see that this nation's laws are upheld and carried out ?

Who swore an oath to do the same ?

Who's responsibility is it to see that the laws are faithfully executed ?

According to two people with knowledge of the situation, Mr. Trump and his chief of staff, Mark Meadows, the man who oversaw presidential records in the chaotic closing days of the administration, failed to organize an effort to collect, box and deliver materials to the National Archives — as prior presidents, and Mr. Trump’s own vice president, Mike Pence, did.

Instead, they often focused on settling political grievances and personal grudges, they said.

In the weeks leading up to Mr. Trump’s departure from the White House, officials discussed what to do about material that he had at various points taken up to the residence and that needed to be properly stored and returned.

By then, the staff secretary, Derek Lyons, known for trying to keep systems in place, had left the administration. Mr. Meadows said he would address such issues, according to a senior administration official.

While all this was happening, a very different scenario was playing out just across West Executive Avenue, in Mr. Pence’s less frenetic office.

As Mr. Trump sought to hold on to power, two of Mr. Pence’s senior aides — Marc Short, his chief of staff, and Greg Jacob, his counsel — indexed and boxed all of his government papers, according to three former officials with knowledge of the work.

Mr. Jacob spent the bulk of his final few days in government preparing the final boxes, with the goal of ensuring that Mr. Pence left office without a single paper that did not belong to him, one of the officials said.
