Make enough to live on is a large spread for some people that might be 400 a week for others it could be 1400. Make some trips to the local truck stops and see what companies you see there in sprinters and cargo vans. Talk to those people about how often they get to the area and how they are doing.
There are a lot of loads going into Nogalas. You can definitely get loads going into Arizona but you might have to sit in Nogales to get a load back out unless it had time on it. Some of them do have enough time that you would be able to get there from Tucson. Don't let the nay sayers stop you from getting into the business. I see loads going out west all of the time, you just have to be with the right company to get them.
Dave nailed it. It doesn't matter where you are out of, the freight goes everywhere. If you go where the freight takes you, and go home when the freight takes you there, which will be once or twice a year, you'll do fine. If you want to get home more often than that, you won't.
Then he certainly needs to be signed on with one of those two companies, because most carriers can't get a specific Sprinter to Arizona all that often. There are loads going to Nogales or Phoenix nearly every day, just from my carrier alone. Some will fit on a Sprinter, some not so much. Some ship from near where I am at the time, most don't.
