snow driving

Hi everybody I did it. I started in Detroit Mi Thursday around 3:30pm and headed to New Castle Delware I went across I-80 and when i made it to Pa about exit 20 they closed it down so i had to back track to the turn pike. It was ok for about 50 miles then it came down like i have never ever thought i had to slow down to about 25mph the it got worse i had to drop down to 10mph it was so bad i stayed slow and kept my eyes an what I thought was the road and finally after Blue mountain it finally cleared it. It took twice as long to make my delivery but the Congisee was so happy that it got there. Next time it gets that bad i will try my best to find a safe place to pull over.

thanks for all the info on driving in the snow

God bless and keep rolling

They closed I80 again? I was stuck doing the detour thing up 11 to 29 over to 81 to bypass everything last week. It was nasty but not enough to have a nice drive up 11 with 150 other trucks.

Not to berate you in any way but you should pull over in a safe place and wait out the weather. No freight is worth your life or an accident.

Glad you made it through without any problems.

There's nothing worse then getting caught in the snow and debating in your head "do I pull over and keep it safe or get this freight off to make more money the next day".

Is there anything more invigorating than achieving the impossible??
You are the man, do your deal and be proud.

Yep nothing more invigorating than having a 29,000 lb truck end up in the ditch during a snow storm because you can't see a d*mn thing out your windshield.

Yep, you are the man, be proud.

LOL

Slowing to 10 m.p.h. when you can't see runs the risk of being hit by someone in an SUV going 30 m.p.h. whith high powered driving lights that let them see but don't help braking ability . When it gets slick I park it . Actually , I listen to the C.B. and park before I hit the bad areas because all available parking ahead was taken long ago .

I wish I could of found a place to pull over but there was ne visability to my sides so it was impossible to pull over saftley the only choice i had was either keep going or stop on the road so I just kept going.

Today I"m sitting in Carslie Pa just off the TurnPike waiting on the storm I guess to come and go, but I'll get to watch the races today horray

god bless and keep rolling

everyone knows there own ability, there are days ill run in a storm, and days I wont, alot of it has to do with where I am and who is driving around me,I'm not going get involved in an accident because some guy needing to drive faster than weather will allow, has an accident that I could get cought up in

Steve,
Maybe I mis-understood you, but many times a lot of these new drivers don't know their limitations which makes them very dangerous. One reason I am all for drivers licenses at 18 instead of 16(14 in some states for hardship cases) is that many kids have no clue about their limitations and get hurt in accidents or killed. The same with new truck drivers and bad weather. .

Bambam, don't be offiended by my comments this was not directed to you but rather to the general readers of the site who think that it is easy to drive a truck like it is a car or a pickup or that they can take chances with other peoples lives.

Speaking honestly, I have seen too many idiots who think that they know what to do with something happens but in reality they don't have a clue. I do seem to be overly critical of people when it comes to safety because of my experiences on the road and hate seeing some of the chances people take. I have, like many others, seen the stupidest accidents and heard the most ignorant excuses used to justify driving when they should be sitting.

I know you have experience driving and know that you know how to ask which is miles ahead of a lot of people on the road, so I know that you are doing well out there.

Bambam glad you made have been in that same situation myself safer to keep going because you can't get off the road. Sure would be nice to have a crystal ball sometimes. Just for these situations. Glad you are Ok. A safe driver with all the skill in the world is still sometimes a Lucky driver.

This is one time a CB radio is worth it's weight in platinum: if the weather is a concern, listen to what the oncoming drivers are saying, and you might be able to get off the road before it gets that bad.

how many times have we ran with them shutting the road down behind us
i rember one time in co a state trooper yelling at me to get off the interstate and i said back when i find a ramp thats not going down hill i'll be off
iv'e also ran right out of a storm or two and delivered early and left a truck in wy cause the company said eather get the truck rolling or your fired
it's all a learning prosses the best you can hope for is that you'll learn the time to get off befor it's to late
