If you thought slavery in the United States of America ended with the 13TH Amendment to the United States Constitution in 1865, think again! If you think your state's constitution can't and wont be broken by your own state and local governments, you better think again! If you believe you or a family member cant fall victim to what I'm about to share, you really need to think again!

How many of you men (and women occassionally) have been ordered to pay "permanent periodic alimony (lifetime) to an ex-spouse like I was in 2001? What will your state do to you if you fail to keep your payments current, even if an unexpected income reduction causes an affordability issue for you? Will they incarcerate you until all back payments are made in full?

Folks, I'm not talking child support here for the welfare of a minor that has no means of supporting themselves. We are speaking about being ordered to pay an adult with a job, that is fully capable of supporting themself on a single income (theirs) being awarded alimony payments simply because they asked for it, and the Judge feels you have the means to pay it for the rest of your life and/or theirs, and with little proof that she/he is truely in need of LIFETIME support. Also without ANY regard for your financial welfare or that of your new family. Once ordered to this lifetime sentence, the courts are very reluctant to change the order and RARELY do. They will garnish your social security check when you've retired just to see that the alimony is paid. Even if its your only source of income till you die. THIS IS VERY REAL!!!

Enslavement and involuntary servitude with the threat of incarceration happens everyday in this country (the land of the free) under the guise of "Alimony". Unlike a murderer, child molester, or rapist that is guaranteed counsel to represent their case in court and is innocent until proven guilty, the alimony payer has no due process in the court system. They are incarcerated indefinately without ever being charged with a crime, simply for failing to pay their alimony payment(s). What happened to the part in the US Constitution that says "No person shall be imprisoned for debt, except in cases of fraud." Again, THIS IS VERY REAL!!!

While they have you incarcerated waiting for somebody to pay all of the arrears owed to date, who do you think is paying for that? Of course its you with your hard earned city, state, and federal tax dollars. Currently the average cost per day to hold someone in a local jail is $125.00/day. The average per year is between 35K-50K depending on the area. YOU ARE PAYING to house these non-criminals in cells meant for real criminals that have committed crimes against society.

In my state alone (Florida) you can go on-line and read one case history after another of men having been (and still are) in jail, some as many as 14-17 years for simply having fallen behind on their alimony payments and did/do not have the means to pay off their arreages and "BUY THEIR WAY" out of jail. There is no "Fraud" here, no crime has been committed, yet "Contempt of Court" for failing to pay a court ordered alimony payment that many can no longer afford in this economy can land one in jail (Florida) indefinately. Many have tried to fight this on an individual basis and spent tens of thousands of dollars on attorney fees only loose and have the court stand on the order as originally handed down.

THIS IS WRONG!!! THIS VIOLATES OUR CONSTITUTIONS!!! THIS COULD BE YOU, YOUR SON, DAUGHTER, FATHER, OR MOTHER!!!

The recent divorce case of Cristy Brinkley is proof that women are not immune from being ordered to pay alimony. Yes, there was a lot of money involved in her case, but blue collar workers also fall into being ordered to do the same. I was on a meager company truck driver's income! We both had steady jobs and the income gap was small.

If you feel this is wrong in America, stand up with us and fight this. The people of the state of Texas did and recently had the Texas permanent periodic alimony law abolished. Many other states have done the same, yet there are states with these laws on their books and still enforcing them. We are not saying end rehabilitative (short term) alimony. Just lifetime. Even thought you may not pay alimony, your words can help!

If your state currently has a permanent periodic alimony law, write them ask ask them to end it NOW! Currently there is a letter writting campaign asking President Obama to put pressure on the remaining alimony states to reform their laws and END SLAVERY in this country once and for all. Your letters can help. With the multitudes comes change.

On-line letters can be sent to President Obama via his website www.whitehouse.gov/Contact/. The Alliance For Freedom From Alimony website (www.alimonyreform.org) is a great source of information about case histories, etc, as are the many other websites on alimony reform on the internet. Your help will be greatly appreciated by tens of thousands of men and their new families across this nation!

Chefdennis, thanks for taking the time to read this important thread and responding to it. It took me a few minutes to go over to the links that I've now included in the original post.

Us is every American that ever was, currently is, and in the future will be ordered to LIFETIME alimony by these outragious laws. Sadly, as one can read in the case histories, men have exhausted all of their financial assests trying to get these orders overturned and ended up having nothing left. Then feeling they have no hope left have ended their lives in Florida and other states devastating family and friends. For what, an out-dated law?

Let me ask eveyone a question:
If you knew before you got married that God forbid the marriage would end ten years or more down the road, and if the court so felt that you could afford to pay your ex-spouse lifetime alimony regardless of your financial needs and would order you to do so, would you take the risk of getting married? Remember, no matter how much you may love each other in the beginning, there is NO GUARANTEE it will a lifetime, yet the alimony will! In most states with alimony laws, a marriage of ten years or more qualifies for alimony awards.

What do laws like this do to the institution of marriage when one knows ahead of time what they would face. Why do you think this is NOT a highly publicized subject or law? The Court system and attorneys have a cash cow here and the last thing they want to see are these laws abolished. Oh, I failed to mention the monthly court handling fees I pay for processing my monthly alimony payments!
