Pro Number: A number assigned by the carrier to a single shipment, used in all cases where the shipment must be referred to. Usually assigned at once.

PRO FORMA INVOICE
An invoice provided by a supplier prior to the shipment of merchandise, informing the buyer of the kinds and quantities of goods to be sent, their value, and specifications (weight, size, etc.)

Hope this answers your question.

A Pro or Pro number is a progressive numbering system. Every shipment is given a progressive number designation. In the LTL and parcel industries each shipment is identified by a pro number and the freight is tagged with a Pro sticker which includes the pro number and bar code equivalent of that number. This number is used for billing and tracking.

Many TL and expedite companies use a simple load number. Panther calls every shipment and even dispatch pro's. So it goes! To the Pro's go the spoils. Time to cut bait and count my glow plugs. Glow little glow plug, glimmer, glimmer....

Pro, short for Processing.

Moot, isn't cutting bait kind of messy? The guts inside of a worm are just icky! And if your using minnows, that's even worse!

While "pro" can certainly stand for processing, and professional, and many other things, in the trucking and transportation industry it is simply a tracking number determined by the PROgressive numbering system.

Just add one.
