Administration to Propose Federal Oversight of Subways, Report Says - FOXNews.com

The Washington Post reports that the Obama administration wants the federal government to oversee subway and light-rail systems.

In the wake of last summer's deadly Metro crash in Washington, D.C., the Obama administration reportedly plans to propose that subway and light-rail systems across the country fall under federal oversight.

The pitch comes as the administration moves to increase regulation over the financial, auto, health care and industrial sectors.

The Washington Post reported Sunday that the administration will present its plan to Congress, which would have to approve it, in the coming weeks for the U.S. Department of Transportation to regulate those systems. The regulation would cover every system from New York City to Washington, D.C. to Boston and beyond.

The shift is an attempt to reverse a long-standing prohibition against federal regulation on subways -- the prohibition dates back to a time when only a handful of cities had subway systems.

But Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood told the Post that federal officials felt hamstrung in the wake of the Metro crash in June.

"After the train crash, we were all sitting around here scratching our heads, saying, 'Hey, we've got to do something about this'," LaHood said. "And we discovered that there's not much we could do, because the law wouldn't allow us to do it."

Federal government always had oversight of the railways....
subways I thought are of local and state level...

Obama wants to rule the world. He'll settle for every aspect of every day of every life in America... at least initially.

NOW WAIT A MINUTE!

This accident happened within the borders of WASHINGTON, DISTRICT OF COLOMBIA which is the seat of the federal government WHICH means that the congress and the federal government controls or should have control over every thing from buses to subways to airports.

H*ll for that matter Carl Levin, who claims to be a resident of DC helped the Taxi services harmonize their rates because the CONGRESS can do that.

The problem with this "The shift is an attempt to reverse a long-standing prohibition against federal regulation on subways -- the prohibition dates back to a time when only a handful of cities had subway systems.

THIS IS BS BECAUSE THE CONGRESS CONTROLS DC AND IN DOING SO FAILED TO MAINTAIN THE SAFETY REQUIREMENTS FOR THE SUBWAY THROUGH THE MANAGEMENT OF THE SUBWAY SYSTEM WHICH IS WITHIN THEIR JURISDICTION AND PROVES WHAT EVER THEY ARE INVOLVED WITH, WILL ALWAYS BE MESSED UP.

Not being an American..I wouldn't have thought of that....

So as far as DC goes the feds or should I say Congress does have control of everything within its boundaries...

Yeppers. But the reason I don't ever want to see DC become a state is that it was intended not to have people living there who will become lobbyist. What I mean is the founding fathers felt that having the capital in New York or Philadelphia presented a problem of neutrality among the states. They saw it that everyone should be on neutral ground to better govern the country which came down to the symbolism of small government controlled by all the people, not just one region, state or city.

I think even giving DC congresional representation is really the wrong move, they should not even be allowed to vote if they live there.

So many years ago there was a mistake made ..of letting permanent housing take hold...there should have been temporary housing for when the Congress was is session and all others would have to commute into the DC boundaries.

Maybe time to move some departments of the government out of DC, to areas of cronic high unemployment and reduce the population pressures which would also reduce the crime rate.

I think the mistake was made when the area started to think of itself as a city/state like Baltimore/Maryland but that all has to do with who is living there and what poor education they wanted to get.
