moving truck

I am buying a Straight truck that is in Kentucky. I want to bring it here to Idaho and work on it over the winter. Then in the spring I am going to put it in service. Idaho said I could get a temporary lic. for Idaho and buy trip permits in each state, well guess what that would cost me around $800.00 in trip permits. I didn't want to get my IRP plate until spring when I put the truck into service with someone. I bought this truck from an individual not a dealer.

Chances are your total cost of an apportioned plate for an entire year(IRP) would be around $800 or less. Something to think about....

Since you can't get a dealer plate, Buy a IRP plate just for the states you run through instead of all of them. Then upgrade the remaining when you are ready to go. Not perfect, but should keep the cost down. Not sure on Idaho but a plate with a handful of states on it should get it down to less than 800.

A plate for 48 states plus Canada for an entire year is only about $650 in Texas. You should check what a plate costs for just the states you'd need to get it home. I'd bet a lot less than all those trip permits. Good luck.

If your transporting it home you need buy no plate at all but you do need to sign the door stating not for higher and in transit. You have 30days to plate the thing and it won’t take you that long to get it home.
And like already stated a base plate don’t cost that much.

Good luck

Putting "not for hire" on the truck will be O.K. in place of a D.O.T. number. It still has to have a plate or temporary tag. It also would have to be insured.

Hi,

If you are buying the truck from a dealer...ask for a " temporary transit plate" to get the truck to Idaho.....

You cannot haul commercially ...but you will have about 30 days to get home....

If you are buying from a private party...you will need to go to state registration office or an agent ( if KY. uses them) and secure the temp transit plate.......

If you are NOT financing you MAY be able to do:
"title only...no tax paid" you can check with Kentucky or Idaho and pay your tax to the state you end up registering the truck....

All state laws are different...but I recently picked up a truck in KC and drove it back to PA with a paper temp tag on the window....perfectly legal ....

I transported my truck from WA to MI, and I got conflicting reports on what to get. MI told me I didn't need anything, but I wonder if they understood what I was saying. None of the states had a problem with me transporting it without a plate, except the Iowa group of IA, WI, MN, and KS. They said I had to have a plate, regardless of whether I just bought it. On the way, I bought permits for MT, WY, and SD (missed the ID scale which saved me $25 for 90 miles). I ran MN and WI anyways, and wasn't stopped the rest of the way home. Sorry... not going back around IA and KS. Personally, I think they need a universal permit system for in-transit trucks.

Hawk I agree.Kentucky, Missouri,Nebraska, South D., Wyoming, Montana, Idaho, told me I don't need a plate a bill of sale and proof of insurance is all I need. Indiana says I need a plate and they also charge you an extra $25.00 for each permit you buy with your credit card. This is insane! (hey Indiana why don't you join the 21st century) Illinois also says I need a plate. OH THE JOYS OF GOVERNMENT FOR THE PEOPLE!!! x( x( x(

Since your are coming out of KY run I64 across southern IN,and across IL. No scales until you get on I70 west of St Louis,(MO was on the no plate list) Then head north out of KC and cut across into Ne. Not to imply you are to do anything illegal but there are ways around purchasing a plate for delivery purposes only.
