I suppose you’ve heard that the Brand Board took over brand inspection on July 1st. I can’t tell you how idiotic I think turning the brand inspection program over to a government agency is, but I had hoped that it would at least start out smoothly. That doesn’t appear to be the case. An article in the Rapid City Journal this week told of small packing plants in Wall and Philip that weren’t able to find brand inspectors when they needed them. The butcher shop at the Jack and Jill Store in Bison had the same problem and had to turn customers away. That was just one of the things the Brand Board never thought about when they took control of the program.
I also got a call from SoDak Angus after Vaughn Meyer couldn’t find a brand inspector to inspect a replacement bull for one of his customers. If any of you have problems with the new inspection program, call Gov. Rounds at 773-3212, Brand Board Chairman Mark Kimball at 337-3448, or the Brand Board office at 773-3324. This is program now belongs to Gov. Rounds and the Brand Board and it is their responsibility to fix what isn’t working. You can find a list of brand inspectors and shippers agents with their phone numbers at South Dakota State Brand Board but there aren’t many listed from this area.
If the incompetence of the Brand Board’s governmental takeover of brand inspection wasn’t damaging livestock producers and packing plants, I’d probably be able to see some humor in this. As it is, I’m reminded of this quote by Will Rogers: “I don't make jokes. I just watch the government and report the facts.”
