Speaker-in-waiting Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., and Rangel know it would be political suicide to even try to roll back Bush's tax cuts. Even if they could pass bills doing it, Bush would relish the chance to veto them.

Nah... they're there to do their bidding. Don't be surprised that the taxcuts get nixed as a part of some economic/social program aimed at the poorest of the poor, and Bush will get lambasted if he vetos it.

I know that everyone hates taxes. However, just like you and me, the government needs to pay it's bills. We cannot keep going withour ballancing the budget.

Completley and fully agree but as I watched Glenn Beck tonight to kill time he made a point - (not his words but close enough)

Lower taxes means more work for people (i.e. more money to spend), more work mean more revenue, more revenue means more money to tax, more tax money means the goverment is getting money.

My point is that all we have heard is the roll back of the tax cuts that favor the rich, but that statement made me happy to see they are not all that dumb. Honestly anyone who is concerned with the millionaire down the street and how much taxes he pays, is not paying enough.

The more people working and each paying their share of taxes idea hasn't worked so far. I don't want my gradchildren paying for this administration's lack of fiscal responsibility.

Actually, it does work. Reagan used that philosophy to kick-start the longest period of sustained, non-wartime, economic growth in history.

JFK did it too, tho the Dems don't want to be reminded of that. It caused a boom lasting into the 70's

Well see here is the problem, unil 1950's the term 'their share of taxes' was never used.

When we allowed people to start telling us that we have to be concerned about the other person is doing or has, it snowballs into something that breeds contempt and jeliousy. The Rosser Reeves of the political world has been allowed to set the ficitious standards for us.

I say lets adopt a more fair and better tax system.

That would be no income tax at all, just a consumption tax. If you don't spend it it isn't taxed. No tax on interest income or capital gains. No tax on estates. That would be combined with a budget that allocates percentages to all governmental functions not dollar amounts. Whatever comes in is divided among those receiving. They better manage wisely and set aside a portion for times when less comes in. Along with that a certain percentage off the top goes to retiring the national debt with no additional debt allowed.

But poor ppl buy stuff too! The mere thought of them not getting something for nothing makes me want to cut the government cheese!

Drug dealers , prostitutes and such buy stuff too . Pretty nice stuff . A comsumption tax would make them pay tax they are avoiding now . I supported Neal Boortz and his Fair Tax until I heard him ridiculing a "born again " Christian on his radio show . He asked , " You were born again ? Did you have to learn to talk and walk again " When the caller said he knew it was something Boortz didn't have knowledge of Boortz said he knew enough to know it was nonsense . I no longer listen to Boortz . We are free to have our own beliefs but we should respect the beliefs of others . Now I have to really question the Fair Tax knowing the type of person promoting it .

Not to ridicule, but if you judge the concept or idea based on the messager, you should reconsider.

The idea is a sound one but must be structured properly. It has to be capped at a reasonable level and it has to be accompanied by a total change in allocation. There can be no more fixed dollar amounts to any entity, only a percentage of what's received. As previously mentioned, it will capture the current and sizable underground economy that isn't paying at all, another benefit of the program.

Sorry Leo,

The fair tax book - ISBN 0060875496

It is a more comprehensive look at the entire program and HR25.

When you read it, read it with an open mind.
