Loudon County, VA Public Schools

The Loudoun county school board is at it again - drawing national attention just in time for the VA state elections this coming Tuesday. Even after the blowup two years ago over their students' bathroom and locker room policy, they're still trying to force students to tolerate members of the opposite sex in their private areas of the school. A large group of students staged a walkout a few days ago in protest, and it's all over the news. Parents all over the state have seen the outrage.

The entire Loudoun County school board is up for reelection on Tuesday. Also hanging in the balance is a chance to flip the state Senate to Republican. Since the House is already GOP controlled, VA could be turning from purple to red in the next few days, and could be a sign of things to come in 2024.

There was a time when I would have objected to the elimination of even the worst of the left, like these school board vermin, and attempted to stop it from happening. Now, they deserve whatever they get, no matter how extreme, and I wouldn't lift a finger to stop it happening.

You were correct that the entire school board was up for re-election and the opportunity existed to flip the VA state Senate to Republican. And you were right that Tuesday's elections could be a turning point and a sign of things to come in 2024.

But it turned out differently than Republicans hoped. The state Senate did not flip from blue to red. Voters kept it blue. Additionally voters took control of the House away from Republicans and gave it to Democrats. Regarding the Loudoun County school board, voters seated Democratic-endorsed candidates in six of the nine board seats.

Indeed, voters literally obliterated the previous board. No incumbents were reelected. Nobody who was on the board before is on the board now.

Why is this? I think it is because, as this article suggests, "Republicans oversold their political advantage by weaponizing school board meetings with culture war issues.”

This voter response was not isolated to the Loudoun County school board. Right-wing moms known as Moms for Liberty (close ties to MAGA) endorsed over 130 school board candidates holding extreme culture-war views. Voters soundly defeated the vast majority of them. See this.

Smart Republicans will think twice before campaigning on culture-war issues again, but no one is accusing Republicans of being smart. While there are some exceptions, Republicans seem intent on ignoring political reality and doubling down on their preferred views.

I don't totally fault them for this. Many of these Republicans are coming from a place of morality and principle. They have deeply held convictions about abortion, gender, sexual behavior, etc. They believe themselves right on these issues. They believe their views are beneficial to the country at large. And they rise to fight for their beliefs.

That's all good. It is what people of integrity do. Where it becomes an issue for me is when these people deny other people the right to do the same; to enjoy equal footing and fair play in our democratic process, and to decide public policy by majority vote.

This is the best result Loudoun County parents could have hoped for. It's probably the most liberal county in the entire state, so expecting a GOP takeover would've been unrealistic. Now maybe they can keep mentally disturbed boys out of the girls' bathrooms and off their sports teams.
