Is it a Volvo or a Freightliner!

Found a couple pics posted online of the new VT Volvo 880. The truck has Volvo’s new D16 engine, rated up to 635 hp with 2,250 lbs.-ft. of torque.

This is apparently Volvo's attempt to make a long nose truck, but to me, it looks more like a Freightliner FLD120 or Coronado reworked. Kinda wierd looking, but you know me.. trying to imagine the expediter potential!

I like the volvo sleeper part, but have never been a fan of the front ends. It is kinda strange looking.

Is that why your a Dreamer? Ok, Ok, Yeah that'd sure be an Expeditor with 635 horses! Wowza...
I have to admit the rims on the thing are distinct too... I wish Volvo good luck with it. I however wish they'd put some skirts on it (not a fan of the Coronado for the same reasons - I think)...

Nah, I been a dreamer for too many years..LOL.. that's why people told my wife not to marry me.. but that's another story..LOL..

seriously, I read some conjecture that this is Volvo's attempt to get the conventional long nosed truck buyer to buy Volvo.

I know a lot of long haul drivers look at Volvo as a city truck, etc.. and they want that long nose road truck look, as evidenced by the Pete 379, KW 900, Freightliner Classic, etc.. so the theory was, they're trying to get that 'chromed out, long nose, road tractor' look, while still keeping some aerodynamics. Hard to combine a long nose with aerodynamics!

Not a bad looking truck except for the stupid hoodside chrome they had to put on to copy the stupid looking Coronado hoodside chrome. With about a 435hp engine and 10sp auto it would be a great unit with a 22' box and tandem drives. I wonder if they'll offer the underbunk toilet/shower combo from the concept truck in it?

I think it looks pretty cool! The best part is I know it's SAFE! You know what they say, some like Caddilacs while others are happy driving Chevys.

If I had the money, that would be my next truck. Anyone know what size sleeper comes standard? I've seen em pretty big.

The sleeper appears to be 77 inches long.
That's the one introduced on the 770, which became the 780.
It's very comfortable and enjoyable.
It's well designed and well built.

Goes to show the ongoing popularity of the long-nose design. It seems market forces brought Volvo to that design, despite the aerodynamic and visibility penalties the long-nose design carry. It does appear that of the long-noses now on the market, Volvo's is more aerodynamic than the rest.

I've read in a few places that the fuel economy difference between the Kenworth W9 and the T-2000 is about 1 MPG. That adds up to a lot of money to pay for the long-nose look.

Looking at Volvo's press release on the 880:

http://www.volvo.com/trucks/na/en-us/#

Volvo USA claims their long 200" BBC cab offers better aerodynamics and fuel economy than other conventional designs, and easier maintenance. The chrome air intake covers are a little "Captain Zoom" looking IMHO, but they are marketing the 880 towards owner operators who like that sort of thing.

Go the extra mile and add a lift gate, tag axle, reefer and some large fuel tanks and you will have a high hp "B" unit. Wouldn't be too profitable but might be fun to drive.

My pick has gotta be that W900L, but then again I'm a KW fan...

I don't know western stars too well... only a few I've really seen operating here near me. Mostly for Wagoner
Is that a 'Constellation'?

RE: Current Long Noses

The one I posted is the 4900 LowMax model. It is several inches lower than a standard unit. I think it would be extremely sweet set up as an expediter with the lower stance. Their website, http://www.westernstartrucks.com/P.asp?Loc=Home shows all the models. The sleeper is an 82" and has a really nice table setup when the bed is stowed. It's a beautiful piece of equipment.
