International Registration Plan

From Wikipedia

International Registration Plan (IRP) is a registration reciprocity agreement among the continental United States and Canadian provinces which provides payment of license fees on the basis of total distance operated in all jurisdictions. The benefit of this is that the carrier only needs one license plate and cab card for each one of their vehicles. A cab card is the vehicle's registration which lists each jurisdiction that they are valid for travel, and for how much weight.
Vehicles are eligible for apportionment under the provisions of the International Registration Plan if they meet the following criteria:
  • Intended for use in two or more jurisdictions
  • Is a power unit having two axles and a gross vehicle weight in excess of 26,000 pounds
  • Is used in combination, when the weight exceeds 26,000 pounds gross vehicle weight
  • Is a power unit having three or more axles

in the old days, a truck might have had 10 different liscense plates fror registration. For every state you werent registered in you had to get a temporary permit. What the IRP did,was made it possible to register your truck in your state, and also list the states you plan to drive in ,so you pay 1 fee for all the states.or just what Greg said
