home time

Can anyone tell me what the average hometime is for expediting?? The o/o that Im going to work for wants me to stay out for 5-6 weeks and then home for two weeks. Is this the industry standard or is there any carrier out there that offers a better break in between? The 2 weeks sounds good but 6 weeks seems like an awful long time. I did it with Werner for a short time and I mean a very short time until I went packin for another job, then again they only offerd 6 days for 6 weeks. Thanks for all of your advice....

There really isn't any set standard for anything in this business other then the fact that just about everything varies. You could leave,be gone a week and get a trip close to your home. I doubt if the owner would object to you going home, taking a day or so and be ready to leave again. On the other hand you could be gone for several weeks or even months if this is what you want out of this lifestyle..

I think some type of written agreement is necessary specifing when and where home time occurrs. You could be gone for 6 weeks and due to many reasons have very little revenue to show for it or you could be gone for 3 weeks and have a ton of money. If thats the case the owner will probably not care if you go home. He/Her needs a certain amount to keep his unit and you going ,so instead of a time frame why not establish a revenue frame and when you reach it then take off.
Good luck and keep us posted.

Most carriers don't mandate a time frame I don't think. At least FedEx doesn't. They give you a reccomendation or what they consider an industry average. This is strictly between you and your owner. This is why I couldn't drive someone else's truck. When I'm ready to go home I put it in the wind regardless of where I am. Not always a wise decision but its my decision to make.

Thats some really awesome advice!!! I doubt if hell ever let me take the truck even close to my house though. I live in Arizona and he wants me to run the east coast. He's even gonna pay to fly me to where the truck is and then fly me home when my tour is up. When you think about it ya cant beat that I guess.

We have a different way of looking at this.

We consider the sleeper our cottage on wheels and thus a second home. The sleeper is big enough and fitted out such that we are often more comfortable than those who spend time at their real cottages, at least in the area we call home-base.

We are always on the lookout for our next camping spot and so very rare is the occasion we will spend extended time parked at a truck stop. We enjoy our time in the present rather than wishing we were someplace else, such as at "home". Somehow, we always feel like we are cheating because it never seems like work.

However, having said this, there is one thing I miss about a real cottage or home... a fireplace. Nothing like the warmth and crackle of a wood fire on a chilly evening.

We live in our truck too and only go home if we NEED some good cajun food which does happen from time to time. Otherwise we stay in the truck and if we need a change we head to a hotel.
Make sure that all the cool ideas the owner throws out like fyying you to and from home are in some sort of contract.Get someone to look at the contract. Lots of people are always recomending contracts and I agree because of all the stories I hear about some owner not thinking they should pay or some driver who thinks that he was supposed to get off every weekend and his idea of off is home.
This is not a regular job it is expedite so you are not going to know where you will be in a week and sometimes if you get the urge bad enought you will drive 300 miles to go home.

Rich,

These are some of the best words you have ever written in the Open Forum. You transcend from one domain (time) to another (revenue), thereby aligning the owner's and driver's best interests. Nothing has to change except how the two parties think about home time. Elegant and brilliant!

Something like agreeing to fly a driver home every two months sounds unreal. He's expecting tons of money to come out of the northeast. If it doesn't happen, what then? If you grossed $4000 a month like the other truck the guy I drive for owns, is he willing to fork out $700 or more as per agreement? First time he doesn't, walk... or fly away.

I try to stay home 2 days for every week gone, but sometimes you have to leave early as the load they offer is to good to turn down

Well this is all a little depressing what you said seems to make perfect sense to me. Ive never driven in the northeast before never even been there.Being that Im a rookie I dont know that Ill be able to make the revenue that he is expecting, but it sounds like a good deal to me right now but after reading all of your posts Im not so sure. What should I do to get started is there anybody out there who is honest without unreal expectations and has some training?? Please Id like to know.

That owner who you are about to drive for sounds like the one that the Magicoen is taking to court. Read his post in the general forum.
I would suggest that you send him an E-mail and compare notes.

I dont think its the same guy. I read his post and that guy worked for an o/o that was leased on with Panther. The man Im going to work for is leased to Fed Ex cc. He also is based in San Mateo California. I should also mention that I worked for this guy last Feb, for ten days. I got ill and had to quit. He had no problem flying me home from Houston. I was off work for awhile and then went back to work in a nonrelated field. He called me the other day and asked if I would like to come back to work for him as he was in the process of ordering a new truck and would I be interested in driving the northeast for him. I told him that I would. I dont know him that well but he flew me to the truck and back. He helped me out alot when I needed his help. He seems like a very pleasant and honest man.He seems to be one of the better fleet owners out there, I dont know Ive only known him for a short amount of time.Im sorry I guess I should have mentioned all of this earlier in my post, didnt mean to decieve anyone, I just wanted some questions ansewerd as I still dont know him very well, thanks for all of your help...
