Home away from Home?

We live in Washington state and realize we will not see home much after we get on the road.

We were wondering about renting a little studio or a small 1 bedroom in a location that might possibly be in the middle of all the shipping lanes. Is this doable?

If there is a remote possibility that something like this would work, where would we want to consider something like this? Ohio keeps coming to our minds but to be honest, we don't have any clue.

Feel free to elaborate on the pros and cons if you have time! :)

Your right, Ohio, and also Michigan, are right smack in the middle of the freight line. That is probably where you will end up more than anywhere else. Guess that is why most of the bigger carriers like Panther ll, Tri-State and Express 1 are located in this area. It would be your best bet if you like getting home a lot. Georgia, TN, and Illinois are also ok places that you will get to a lot. My husband and I live in Calhoun, GA. We get loads going that way maybe once or twice a month though we don't usually go home every time we get to Georgia we will stay over-night if we are layed over. My suggestion would be to find an apartment around the Toledo, Ohio area.

Definitely doable. Another thing to consider would be "Extended stay" Hotel/Motels. They have kitchens and are well suited for life off the road. Best of all, no maintenance or clean up.
Extended Stay America Hotels - Affordable hotel suites for long term business travel, relocation or vacation

Would work, you would only have to pay for the nights you stay, you wouldn't have all of the bills associated with home like electric, cable, water, gas, ect, but you would not actually have an address or a place to call home. You, for all purposes, would be homeless. I personally like knowing I have a 'home' to go to even if it means spending a couple thousand a month to keep it going. So the thing you want to look at is how much does having a home mean to you? Is it worth it?
Also, don't forget in the future if you decide to change carriers, or jobs, the prospective employer wants an application completed with 10 years of previous employment and addresses. Especially for your airport security check and government clearance.
Just a thought but a thing to remember also is TN is in the freight line and they have no state income tax so that would also be a good deal. We all get to TN a lot. :D

As a resident of Arlington, TX, I never have to take time off. I'm smack in the middle of Dallas and Ft. Worth on I-20. Not far from I-45 to Houston and in the middle of I-35E and I-35W. I drive right by on the way back from El Paso. If I deliver on a Friday nearby I know I'll be home for the weekend.

And, the weather if pretty good down here.

P. S. Still like the 'no taxes' Tennessee thing though! :)

We live near Toledo and not all that far from Detroit. Most of the time when we are home we have to dead head a good bit to get a load to leave the house. We seldom get runs into the area. Of course that MIGHT be because we live there. The guy who we drove for when we first started lives near Charlestown SC. He gets loads near my home all the time when he is out. I often get loads to his area. He has only got 4-5 loads to his HOME area in over 14 years. Many of us out here kinda think that carriers don't get you near home to keep you out. No proof, just seems that way. Layoutshooter

You might not need a home for stuff but you do need a "real" address to be able to vote. A PO box is NOT a legal residence. Many seniors that live in RV's and have no real address they have learned that they could not vote. Layoutshooter

I'm from Ill where 8% of the votes in any given election are post-hummus ,do you think not having a real address stops anybody?

I expect that from IL. That area is famous for political corruption. That is just what the law reads. Gee, I guess I am foolish but I follow those silly laws!! Layoutshooter

watch this and ask yourself do i have to much stuff that may help you deside do i need a real house to call home.

YouTube - George Carlin Talks About "Stuff"
This was great. It only took me over a day to watch it because I had too much "stuff" on my computer that would not allow me to see this Carlin Video! lol. I had to remove stuff from my computer so I could put more stuff on my computer to watch someone else's stuff! :)

After watching this, I'm wondering if I can talk Lyn into not bringing her rock recollection on the truck. :D:p

Not only do you need a real address to vote, you need one to be able to claim the per diem deduction. If your truck is your home, then you're never away from home when on the road.

Heres my thought. Why rent when you could buy? With the amount of forclosures out there there are some great deals being had and your monthly payment will be less then renting. BUT this is all continigent upon your cash and credit score.

If Im reading this right, they have an address in washington state, but what no one has mentioned,if moving to a new address, and ohio has rule live here a month need new drivers liscense, then they may as well move to what ever state they would feel is in the expedite lanes. Before i would do that though, better find out if expedite is for you
I live in a 1 bedroom, pay 425 month and i can keep my tractor here if i wish
