I driver for America Expedited LLC, and I am new to expedite. I used to drive for for swift, but decided to come over to America Expedite. I do have one question right off bat. What does it take to get my own authority?

1st off, before trying to get your own authority, you better get some experience in the business. If your going to depend on brokers to find your loads, you may as well work for a company

Why so angry? I just wanted to know what it takes to get my own authority. I dont want to depend on a broker, because I wont need one if I have my own authority, see? Yeah I may use one, but not depend on one. I have a lot of money saved up, and I am planning on buying my way into the necessary boards to bid on loads. But I need authority first.

If you have a few bucks set aside, you may want to consider buying a small Company. I was ready to quit a couple years ago and sold my Company to a fella that couldn't be more pleased, today. If you find the right one, you could step into a well respected Company and ALL the customers, freight availability and Authority, safty ratings etc. has been established. It's really tough and takes a long time to get established from ground zero, and many , many more fail than succeed.

Don’t do it! Don’t do it! This industry had a very high failure rate. When you enter a business in which you have NO experience it can take time to learn the business. In this industry, learning can be costly. While this isn't rocket science, it does take time to learn your way around. There have been a few who have started in this business with no experience and have made it work. Others have failed miserably. If you have the money to get past the learning curve, you may be able to do well. So many come into this business without experience, money or resources and those are the ones who find it very difficult to survive. If the guy has owned businesses in the past he has a much better chance than someone who comes to the business without any experience.

What JPC said is every wisw advise!! Especially knowing that you came over from Swift or anyother common carrier...alot of "Regular" otr drivers don't make it in Expediting becuase they can't adjust to the "waiting game"..yea it is easier in a TT, but there is still a big failure rate for newbies in those also...

Take your time and learn the business and make sure you can make the adjustment...then if you are ok, go for it and you can start with getting in touch with someone like, Foley Services Inc. Foley Carrier Services

They can explain everything and for a fee set you up in no time....but!!! if you are thinking that getting our own authority is a cake walk to big bucks without alot of 'other" work...forget it... there is alot of Fed compliance issues and rules and reporting and just general gov bs that you will need to stay on top of...yea there are people that do it all from the cab of their truck, but for the most part, having someone at home or an outside service handle all the details of the daily crap is the best bet...but it ain't cheap, unless someone at home is doing it....

But again, take the time to learn the business, then see where you are at a year from now before you make a major move....just my nickels worth of advise....
