Gun Control and Death Penality.

Barack Obama intensified his campaign to appeal to voters on the life-and-death issues of the American heartland yesterday by stepping away from his past support for gun control.
In the latest in a series of policy reversals for the Democratic presidential candidate, Obama came out in support of yesterday's supreme court decision overturning a gun ban in the city of Washington that had been a model for fighting urban crime.
He had previously supported the Washington ban, the strictest in the US.
It was the second time in 24 hours that Obama had shifted towards a more conservative position. On Wednesday, he took issue with the supreme court for striking down the death penalty for cases of child rape that do not involve murder.
In yesterday's decision, judges struck down Washington's 32-year-old gun ban by a five-to-four margin, saying it was incompatible with the second amendment of the constitution. "Whatever the reason, handguns are the most popular weapon chosen by Americans for self-defence in the home, and a complete prohibition of their use is invalid," the conservative Justice Antonin Scalia said. However, the judges defended the need for firearm bans in schools and public buildings.
Immediately after the ruling Obama and the Republican candidate, John McCain, both sought to exploit one of the most emotive political issues. McCain tried to revive charges that Obama was out of step with smalltown values. Obama ran into controversy last April for telling a fundraiser that Americans in small towns clung to guns and religion out of bitterness.
"Unlike the elitist view that believes Americans cling to guns out of bitterness, today's ruling recognises that gun ownership is a fundamental right - sacred, just as the right to free speech and assembly," McCain said.
Obama, chastened by that controversy, tried to keep to a narrow line between hunters and gun enthusiasts and urban areas desperate to fight street crime. "Today's decision reinforces that if we act responsibly, we can both protect the constitutional right to bear arms and keep our communities and our children safe." His carefully phrased comments were seen as a sign of his shift towards the centre before November's election.
On Wednesday Obama, once a critic of the death penalty, opposed the decision to strike down Louisiana's death penalty for child rape not involving murder. "I think that the rape of a small child, six or eight years old, is a heinous crime and if a state makes a decision that under narrow, limited, well-defined circumstances the death penalty is at least potentially applicable, that that does not violate our constitution," he told a press conference.
The hard line was seen at variance with comments in his memoir that the death penalty was not a deterrent to crime. As an Illinois state senator he had opposed the death penalty for gang murders.
Earlier this week, Obama reversed his opposition to a bill to legalise the Bush administration's wiretapping programme. Last week, he reneged on a promise to uphold the public campaign finance system put in place after Watergate. And earlier this month, he was even more forceful than the Bush administration or the Israeli government in support of the Jewish state's territorial claims to Jerusalem.
"He ran to the left to get nominated, and he is running back to the centre in the general election," said Larry Sabato, a politics expert at the University of Virginia. "You can call it flipflopping, or you can call it readjusting, or you can call it determined to win."

Its about time

I call it another liberial liyng threw his teeth!!! They ALL want to disarm us. That will make it easier to control us. That IS what socialism is all about. Taking away your freedom and controlling your every move. Remember not at that long ago a few of these do-gooders wanted to put a tax on fast food. People are fat and it's McDonalds fault. They even want to tell you what you can and cannot eat. Not to mention how much water you toilet uses per flush. And you all want to tell me that this is not a terrany in the making? Hope you all can shoot straight. Layoutshooter

Layout,
Don't worry about Obama, his agenda is crystal clear and he is pandering right now. The proof is that the Supreme Court let stand the needed background checks, the fundamentals but did not address the need for accessible medical records in a neutral fashion or other measures to ensure proper purchases or the fact that there is no real definition about if a car, property or other venues are an extension of one's home.

You got to read the opinions, and I can tell you that if Obama does get in, he most likely will be replacing one of the judges OR he and reid and pelosi can pull an FDR on the country and increase the number of judges by two and appoint radical judges to throw off the balance. The repubs are so scattered that they won't be able to stop it.

The key word in all that as far as I am concerned is tax. All Obama and those like him want to do is tax us to death. Their notion (for some reason) is to take from those who do and give to those who do not. There are a lot of reasons I will vote for McCain over Obama, but this is a key one.

We most likely will lose the court no matter who is elected. Mcain will have the Dems in charge of both the house and senate. He no longer has the B*lls to insure real judges. The Dems should change thier name to the Taxes. Taxes are one method that the socialists use to control us. Layoutshooter

taxes... yes we need more of them... how about we just raise a new tax on guns... yea , we take the idea used for 'automatic' guns and apply it to all guns... a five six seven hundred dollar permit will be required before allowed to own much less use a gun,,, ok .... i'm joking.

i wouldn't be supprised if this tactic was implemented by the gun control bunch. they try more underhanded and outragious things every day. i really enjoy my guns. i try to get to the range every time i'm at the house. i really need more freight or higher rates so i can buy more and the ammo to go with them. my personal belief is that if more people had guns, and knew how to use them, there would be a lot less crime. i'm really disappointed when i hear of the latest attack by a 'mad gunman' where more are wounded than killed. shows sloppy marksmanship. the parents should hang their head in shame for not teaching their child better.

obama has a anti gun record and if elected will do what he can to ensure the 'bitter gun owners' are not disappointed with his efforts to eliminate this source of 'bitterness' unfortunately i'm not a bitter gun owner but a happy gun owner.

in terms of my ability to shoot straight, i freely admit i'm not competition level; but would have no qualms going toe to toe if needed and confident of hitting the target. at ranges greater than 50 yard would prefer a rifle, but might get by with my scoped 45lc revolver if needed.

as a side note... i don't cling to my religion, but adhere to it. big difference i think.

as to death penality it is not used often enough, and takes too long when it is. punishment should be 'swift and sure' when applied. as it is the opponents are right; its not a deterrent... because its so seldom applied. and sitting on death row for years at my expense just wastes money.
