Guess They Never Heard of a "Salt Shaker"..

Salt changes the taste of many things and in processed food it makes for a nicer flavour. So the biggest problem is the amount in many processed and fast foods. For someone on a sodium free diet (and there a lot of them out there) this does pose some slow shopping trips as all labels must be read carefully. These persons are restricted from some of the new fast foods out there and quite a lot of the packaged and processed foods available to us.

I know this well as my mother was on a very strict sodium free (no salt period) diet so all cooking done without salt or any additives that contained sodium products (there's several different salts available). So no fast foods for family outings and food was cooked with little packaged sliced meats etc.

No need for the government to get involved. People need to learn how to read packages. In fact, maybe they should learn how to cook with FRESH FOODS!! OMG!! How hard is that? OH, maybe they could even learn to hunt and fish and get REAL food. You know, the kind that does not grow in the store?

Actually Layout, there is a lot more than reading the label.

The real problems are too simple to solve with this issue, get rid of some of the petroleum based/derived preservatives within the product and make it more locally.

You would not believe the cr*p that is in even "freshly made" food and how it affects people.

I won't get into the problems I had the other day with the 14th dietitian I had to see. With her 15 years of experience, she never been told what I told her today about diebetics and food.

Sure there is, I know that, however, many don't even do that much!! I try to eat only meat that I shot and fish that I catch when home. Better for you, and I KNOW how it was handled!!
More flavor than that production stuff sold in stores.

What people call "that gamey taste" is actually flavor!! Many have never tasted food with flavor!!! :p

Well I went through a "certified organic" seminar last year, it was free and I didn't have anything else to do.

The FDA people who were hosting it had a number of "experts" who spoke about the process and licensing of an organic farm.

After the main speakers, there was a Q&A breakout sessions and I was put into one who did something with Ed Begley and some sort of community organic thing - a real expert.

So I asked this;

I was out in California back in 2007 and went to a couple of these organic farms which I was impressed with. I noticed that they were close to or bordered the freeways out there with no buffer zone. I also notriced that there were a number of Almond and Avocado farms with these big signs claiming all organic. I am wondering why would these be organic farms because if we are concern with pollutants and chemicals reaching plants and food, wouldn't these farms be beyond a buffer zone, like a mile away?

I never got a stright answer but I have since asked Michigan state the ag people the question and they said that there should be a buffer zone with all organic farms.

Who knows who is right, the organic thing doesn't mean it is really better or free of polution and chemicals because they are still stuck on a truck and travle hundreds of miles it not thousands of miles to be sold.

Hey just as I'm thinking of it. I have been buying iceberg lettuce that has been actually really really crappy, wondered if anyone else noticed the slide in quality?

In the olden days a mixed marriage, black and white, was referred to as, here comes that salt and pepper couple.

But I guess these days it would be racist to ask for the salt or pepper separately would be racist?;)

Back on real topic...

The salt/sodium content is absurd...since I've been a label reader it is astounding how we are ramming in the salt up to 3-5x the daily recommend allowance..

one of them Tornado/tacitos off the roller grill at Pilot is 67% sodium...

Even DIET food is unhealthy....just look at sodium in those Lean Cuisine meals...

That is just one of the reasons we want to buy a freezer for the truck. Cooking our own meals at home would cut down on the sodium DRASTICALLY!!! It would pay for it self quickly too.
The flavor, well let's see, homemade venison stew or a "J" Buffet?

I was wondering, they use at least as much salt and I would say even more than we do in Japan. That was the very first thing that I notice about the cooking over there. I wonder what their BP is like?

hmmm..let's see. The nutrasystem diet for diabetics is soy and salt...and 90% of it tastes like cardboard anyway. This had better be worth it!!!!:D

I cook a lot more now even being a solo then before...I too am limited by the volume...I get maybe pork chops or steak, chicken..with a shelf life where I know it will be used within 3 days or sooner...I got my spices and NOT salt...I cook my own pasta dishes NOT the frozen meals...and sodium reduced soups and even peel my own spuds....baked spud is getting a lot od playtime now...it is easier...

BUT that said you know too sometimes when it gets busy there is just no time...

It is very difficult in our lifestyle to be sure. I need to be wealthy. Then I would have time to eat right and get proper exercise. I would weigh 60lbs less if I were rich!! Anyone interested in funding that experiment? :p

Salt as we know is a water retainer...and in conjuction with bad circulation blocked arteries is a bad thing as the body has a hard time just processing the natural water build up, whence swollen ankles and feet....I don't think salt in itself in a healthy as in non clogged individual causes the high BP...it is connected tho..

It is a contributing factor to be sure. Not everyone is salt intolerent. I starting cutting back on my intake long before my BP went up. Did not help. Heavy exercise did not help. I was on BP meds the entire time I was on the PA Hot Shot Forest Fire crew. Worked out hard those years. Lost very little weight, and we were still increasing my BP meds. Go figure.

Example of heavy workout: 30-45 minutes on a stairstepper with a 50lb back pack on, every morning before work. Every afternoon after work running up and down the stairwell in a 9 story building for 30-45 minutes. Couple that with normal fire fighter training and forest fire crew training. I lost 8 pounds, total. Still had that ole gut and still had high BP.

Morton Light Salt is our choice. It's 50% less sodium. None at all would be best of course but wouldn't taste nearly as good.

Not everyone's metabolism is the same...ya see them skinny runts and they eat like they have a wooden leg...*lol*

The other day a long walk into Wallys and 2 laps around the store no rest 140/72...before I started this whatever I do it would have been like 210/110!!! WAY high!

I was almost under the weight limit for my height when I went into the Army. I was 5' 10" (still that, not started to shrink yet) and weighed 125lbs. I ate non-stop, as much as I wanted and anything that I wanted. I gained 5lbs in basic. That is a result of muscle gain and getting a solid 4-5 hours sleep a night!! FAR more than before I enlisted!!!
