China thwarts Google's detour around censorship

SAN FRANCISCO – Google's attempted detour around China's Internet censorship rules was met with countermeasures Tuesday by the communist government, which blocked people on the mainland from seeing search results dealing with such forbidden topics as the pro-democracy movement.

China's maneuver, as well as its public rebuke of Google's decision to stop censoring searches for the government, rattled some of the company's investors, advertisers and users.

The chief concern is whether Google poisoned its business in one of the world's most promising Internet markets. One analyst critical of Google's move predicted the maneuver will cause the company's stock to fall by as much as $50 — or about 10 percent — in the coming weeks.

The stock fell $8.50, or 1.5 percent, to $549 Tuesday.

The situation was, Google went in and agreed to censor for the Chinese government. They agreed to censor this and that, but as time went on the government kept adding things they wanted to have Google censor. The workload of the government was gradually being pushed off onto Google. Then the hacking of Google Web and e-mail servers from computers within the Chinese government. Enough was enough, and Google moved everything to Hong Kong, putting the burden of having to censor everything back onto the Chinese government. I say good for Google.

I don't think that Google is getting burnt. I'm glad they went with their principles rather than cave entirely to censorship. While yes they will lose out on this increasing huge market and the advertising revenue from that market, they can expand into a lot of other areas in the area and of course in India. The whole area over there is an up and coming internet market.

I applaud the GOOGLE boys for not not only standing up to the Chinese, but to their board of directors, wall street, and countless other pundits, who only think of the lost revenue.

Leo Laporte says the Chinese people know how to get around the governments attempt to block, and still use the best search engine out there.

In the end. GOOGLE will probably be stronger than ever for their stand.
