Good day everyone

Just signed into the forums, and as the nic says, I'm not a newbie at this, either expediting, or the forum concept.

Just a bit of history, I joined Roberts Express in 1985, was one of the 1st 10 trucks to make up the White Glove Division, worked with Dave Hodge and that fantastic lady, Angela, to make money!

After the sale, and impending micro managing, by Roadway Services, I decided to move on. Taking 3 trucks and 6 drivers with me.

I'll never forget the Friday evening, in 1994, about 5pm, when the Qualcomm beeped to life, and THREE pages of "policy changes" came across! Me and my co-driver were sitting in Atlanta. The message said, "There will be people available to answer your questions all weekend long" ... of course I could never speake to one.

Sunday evening I headed to Akron, and was met at the door by Bobby, who said something to the affect of, "I've been expecting you, come in and close the door."

After chatting with her, and finding out Roadway had these policies written in srone I removed the qualcomm from that truck on the spot, and sent the rest in.

I took my Peterbilt to Hot Shot Xpress and remained there for another 10 years.

A quick stint at Express America in 2003 saw me having my contract cancelled after 11 months and 3 weeks. (I had a fender bender, hit a car in the butt, in stop and go traffic).

Back to Hot Shot until April last year when I returned to Express America.

I have a Sprinter 2500, with Midway Conversion sleeper.

As for me, agent based companies are the best of all worlds. I do not need a computer screen in a far away galaxy, and a 19 year old, (though well intentioned), BA gardauate telling me how to run my business.

Express America, and their agents, rely on me being able to perform the function I agreed to do. No penalties for refusing a load that does not fit my business model, and great agents to work with, that are making their business grow by utilizing my wheels. Works for me!

For many of you, welcome to my world, for others ... **** we've been at this a long time!

(oh, btw, does anyone here owe me money?)

Welcome to EO! What took you so long? LOL! :)

I remember that same policy fleet message - what a blast from the past.

Anyway, glad you are here. I'm sure you have many stories to share!

Thanks Larry .... I'll figure out the format to this forum board if I keep tinkering with it.

They do add weight, no doubt. My load capaicty is about 2500 pounds .... on a GVW of 8500 pounds. But as I mentioned, this is my retirement job .. and I am not going to sleep on a cot in the back, so to speak.

As a matter of note, Sprinter's can now be purchased in the 3500 series with a GVW of 9900 pounds again, keeping it below the requirements for logs, etc. With a raised floor, and some wheel well modifications, one can carry 4500 pounds of freight. (My '03 Sprinter was such)

As for agents, the only expediter company that I know does it, is Landstar. While they have more than 200 Express agents listed, I only work with a few .. they seem to keep me busy enough.

I just added pictures of the two trucks I was best known for, the Ford F-700 was the 1st 60' sleeper Roberts had, and the Peterbilt was the first temp controlled one.

Those opening days of White Glove were money makers! $4.00 a mile as not uncommon ....

Lots of ground breaking took place there as Hodge and Snyder tried to break into govt and art work ...

I once deadheaded from San Jose to Washington Dc to pick some new and sensitive parts for the space station they had there for testing .. took it all th way to Greenville, Sc .... short run, long deadhead .. but we did get the NASA contract! Woo hoo!
