We have one driver who is Mr. Professional. Everything is yes sir, no sir, please and thank you, the whole nine yards, former military and extremely respectful with everyone. Last week he went in to pick up a load and it wasn't ready yet. He asked the shipper when it would be ready and was told a couple hours, so he called me and told me it was going to be a couple hours and he was going to go get a bite to eat and come back.
Then I get a phone call from our customer on this load telling me that the shipper just called to complain about the driver, saying that he was rude and they don't want to see him back on he property. We were pulled off the load. I called the driver and he told me that nothing seemed to be out of sorts when he was there. He asked when the freight was going to be ready, he was told a time, and he went on his way.
Now I know all this customer is always right business, but in this case I felt I needed to defend the driver. I knew we weren't going to get the load back, but we have a three year history with this guy and he's never been less than polite with anyone, so I felt the need to tell our customer that whoever at the shipper says he was rude was off his rocker. I was told that because of the circumstances we weren't going to get dry run pay and I came back and said that because we were pulled off the load on what must be a false accusation that I expected double our normal dry run charge. The next day a higher up from this customer called me and we had a good talk where I once again insisted that our driver was not rude to anyone and that the shipper was most likely trying to back out because they probably found a cheaper option. We eventually got the dry run I asked for and got another load for the driver.
How would you have handled this? Was I right to adamantly take our driver's side even though I wasn't there? How often does this sort of thing happen? I'll still insist that he wasn't rude and the shipper was trying to back out of the load without paying anything. What do you think?
