According to our resident armchair political pundits the economy is going to dump next year..that is according to their sources...but I also see more capital investment is some areas...saying just the opposite...

U.S. railroads will reap the benefits of the economic recovery more quickly than truckers, Moody’s Investors Service said in a report.

“We expect railroad sales growth to outpace growth for truckers into the second half of 2010,” the report said.

Factory Orders Surged Again

By SARA MURRAY

Orders for manufactured goods are surging, with another jump in March, and business spending continues to grow.

New orders for factory goods rose 1.3% to $391.5 billion, the 11th increase in the past 12 months, the Commerce Department said Tuesday. Orders increased 1.3% in February as well.

The March results were led by a rise in orders for nondurable goods, items designed to last less than three years.

Factory Orders Jumped and Pending Home Sales Rose in March - WSJ.com

The National Association of Realtors' index for pending sales of used homes rose by 5.3% to 102.9, the industry group said Tuesday. The index was 21.1% above its level of 85.0 in March 2009. Economists surveyed by Dow Jones Newswires had expected pending home sales would climb by 5%.

February pending home sales were revised slightly up, with the index rising 8.3% to 97.7. Originally, the NAR had said the gauge rose 8.2% to 97.6.

The NAR index is based on pending sales of existing homes, including single-family homes and condominiums. A home sale is pending when the contract has been signed but the transaction hasn't closed. Pending sales typically close within one or two months of signing.

$77k per unit isn't too bad and if it saves millions in accident losses the unit cost drops substantially more.

strange choices of safety technology .
all electronics gigs ,no investment on shorter stopping distance larger brakes ,air discs Ext.
they buy all of this just before the new sorter breaking distance mandate come to effect ,but the technology is ready .
my conspiracy needle vibrating a bit .
that money could have being invested in driver training .
this is a pre SCR buy ,and everyone can get a killing of a deal on those now .
i just hope this kind of technology will never be mandated on heavy duty trucks .
good read tho'w .
Thanks.

OMG OVM, of course there is going to be big purchases this year, talk to your accountant why. NOW is a great time to be able to make large purchases, like $100M in equipment.

I agree with moose, the money is better spent on proper training. Technology masks a lot of issues that only training can solve but training isn't a tangible investment, like those fancy dials and knobs.

As for as an Armchair economist, that's funny. This past week we have been warned by a bunch of them that if our new god doesn't do something quick, we are heading into serious problems. No two can agree which will hit us harder, the slowdown in the economy or the deflation.

I agree somewhat ole Greggo...the G20 really slapped Obama around....DEBT...stop spending...he doesn't get it...

Did you read my Ontario post? cutting corporate taxes by 3% and eliminating others completely....even Ontario knows they need to create NEW jobs, not just be happy old ones come back.....the world is passing the US by as it stands still and digresses....

As Greg said, of course you are going to see big purchasing until the ens of the yr...with the bush tax cuts coming and businesses (of all sizes including some of us) seeing the "write offs" deduce or even disappearing, they are taking advantage now:

Six Months to Go Until<br> The Largest Tax Hikes in History

Small business expensing will be slashed and 50% expensing will disappear. Small businesses can normally expense (rather than slowly-deduct, or “depreciate”) equipment purchases up to $250,000. This will be cut all the way down to $25,000. Larger businesses can expense half of their purchases of equipment. In January of 2011, all of it will have to be “depreciated.”

Watch how fast investments and jobs disappear next yr.....

Con-Way spends $100 million on high-tech trucks.

That's funny coming from a company that didn't start spec'ing trucks with power steering until the mid 1990's.
