Class 8 Truck

Looking for some input on class 8 trucks with 22ft boxes with set tandems (10 Wheelers). Do they make for a better truck and is there a better chance of getting more loads because you can carry the extra weight, but also will going over the 50k gross weight change the tax game somewhat.

If I'm not mistaken, the tax changes around 52-54k.

As far as a class-8... smoother ride, comparable milage to class-7s, more tire wear and tear. But your chance of getting a t/t load is slim. You'd be lucky to get one a month with any company. Dispatchers aren't going to be persuaded to keep a lookout for special runs for your truck. I wouldn't count on those tandems being a moneymaker unless you're looking for loads yourself.

Leo... how many t/t loads have you gotten so far with your truck?

All things being equal such as condition and milage, the class eight will outlast the class 7. If paying more for a class eight and it is the same year, it would depend on the price differential.
If it was a tractor and then stretched after its trailer service, I would have it professionally inspected to ensure the modification was done to specs.
Will you get more loads? Much of that depends on the company and how they utilize their fleet. Keep in mind that it has to be enough to offset additional taxes, maintenance, tolls, and a drop in fuel economy verses a single axle. It may or may not be a benefit.

With regards to taxes, much depends on the state you are to register it in. It would be advisable to call your state IRP office for a exact quote. Additionally, some states require you to pay personal property tax on your vehicle. Amounts if any depend on the state you reside.

Good luck

Thanks for the input. I know my next truck will be a used class 7, The class 8's were just catching my eye but i notice they also had some pretty steep miles on them as do some used 7's. I will check a little further into the archives.

Thanks again

I drove a class 7 and now am in a class 8. The difference in the ride is exceptional. I expected a better ride but this honestly rides as well as my car. I'll add a disclaimer that I don't drive a Cadillac I drive a Mitsubishi Ralliart so it's a sporty ride not a limo ride.

I had one load that was going to be 13,xxx but it cancelled prior to running. When the express centers look at truck availability it lists the capacity and they know that a pretty good number of D units are available with 18k capacities so I expect to get heavier loads now and then.

I wouldn't recommend a class 8 tandem just for the extra capacity because that's going to take too long to pay off. I will say that the extra capacity can and will make you some more money, with how much depending a lot on who you run for, while giving you a much more stable and comfortable ride as well as much greater useful lifespan. I can't see going to anything else now that I've experienced this but that's just my personal viewpoint.

Evening Everyone

Well so much for me getting into a Class 7, missed a opportunity on something I was looking at. So I will be giving the Class 8 a go. Found one more in my price range. 2000 F/L Century, Cummins 400hp, 10 spd trans, 641k. Truck has had updates and is road ready (Of course pending a little deeper inspection) Truck is clean and was very well cared for. Will be leased onto company where a D unit is just that won't be bumped around are kept in any particular spot will be on the board like everyone else. And the added weight capacity should work to my advantage. I did comb thru the archives and a found a few things out, but if anyone could give a bit more info on running a class 8 in respect to keeping her running right and reducing tire wear I would be most greatful

Many Thanks
