Cargo Van makes a comeback?

Piper,
You got a few things right.

The first thing is unless you get a C unit cheap, then buying one now makes no sense at all. FedEx is the only carrier I can find that can actually use one - reefer or not. They epitomized the C unit into something that was needed for one or two special purposes or plan but I think that at this time their customer and more or less most of the small truck work has dried up for a bit.

The second thing is that what makes it hard for me, and people like me is the competition with box trucks, some "claim" to haul more than 4000lbs while others will run near nothing with some carriers. The vans take some of the work away, buy it is that over 2500lb load that seems to be going on those box trucks that are under 10k.

The C unit isn't dead yet, or I hope it isn't. The Van has taken a lot of freight from us little trucks and it is alright for now. The rates that most of you run at contractually makes a difference for you now, but may not last if the customers keep expecting declining rates in the shadow of a bad economy. If fuel prices go up, if the economy goes south, and so on, then there will be another change to the landscape.

All of this great news should not mean to jump in, the water is still very cold.

Also Greg in relation to the under 10,000lb box truck, carriers tend to pay only van rate on the FSC...which is about a dime cheaper then a straight...now if they could have one that got over 20mpg or at least close. Boxers tend to be fuel hogs.

I concur..this is still not the time to jump in...while the boards may look busy, there is still a lot of uncertainty.

Cargo Van makes a comeback?

Where has the cargo van been to make a comeback? How long has it been gone? Is it coming back from the brink of extinction? Why am I just finding out about this now?

Anybody know when the rates will come back? I turned down a reduced rate load with a low f.s.c. this morning that was picking up at 18:00. I had to call in after I refused the load because I was locked on it. When asked why I didn't want this great load with plenty of miles I answered with the low pay, low f.s.c. reply. I was told by the dispatcher I would be sitting a long time because all the loads today are reduced rate. Is this the Tuesday special?

4 hours later I get a full rate/.17 mile f.s.c. I'm early and waiting on the freight as I type. Sure the mileage is less but I'm in it for the money. Oh well! Someday I will convert to the mileage mindset, but not today.
