Canada Canada ranks Number 2 and is on its way to becomin

In the October issue of 50plus.com, Gordon Pape, one of Canada's leading financial reporters, has written an important article entitled, The Quiet Superpower. In this article, Mr. Pape outlines the significant inpact that Canada''s oil industry will have on Canadians in the coming years. For those of you who have not red the piece, it is must reading. Here are some of the key themes and the impact of the changes that are taking place on the trucking industry.

The Turning Point

Mr. Pape highlights that Canada was a second tier oil producer until the price of crude oil hit US$40 a barrel and stayed there. At that point the the production of crude oil from the Alberta Oil Sands became profitable enough to warrant the investment of hundreds of billions of dollars in development.

Canada ranks Number 2 and is on its way to becoming Number 1

Canada apparently possesses the world's second-largest oil reserves with only Saudi Arabia ahead of it. According to one expert, Canada controls 56% of the world's investable oil resources. Once the Arctic opens up to serious exploration, which with global warming is becoming easier by the day, we may become number one. This certainly explains the tremendous interest in the region in recent months.
As Mr. Pope points out, a number of countries discourage foreign investment. As the price of oil rises and the process of extracting oil from the tar sands becomes more efficient, more multi-billion dollar projects are going to emerge. Canada's oil production could increase from one million barrels a day to four million barrels a day by 2020.

Just another reason to love our brothers to the North.:)

Glad to hear there's a lot of oil money going to a non-terrorist country!

May 29, 2007 // Published as a news service

For the eighth consecutive year, Canada is the main source of oil and natural gas for the U.S. From 2005 to 2006, Canada's oil exports grew by 6%, according to the U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA).

I second that, Dave! And tho they may lean towards socialism a little, there's no fear of dictatorship... ala Hugo Chavez. I hope we gradually withdrawl our oil needs out of the Mid East, and head towards our neighbors. Let's get their beef while we're at it!

My Brother-in-law is in the Alberta Oil Sands industry. They can't find enough people for the growth. It is like a "Gold Rush" attitude - everyone drives the biggest, newest SUV 4X4 Diesels, Hummers etc. Land grabs - everyone is in big money.

People at their local Wal-mart make $20+ an hour.

I don't always agree with Gordon Pape; he must be flogging oil exploration shares in his mutual funds. It is true that there are large resources of oil in northern Canada but they are not going to be cheap to exploit. They are mostly in the form of TAR SANDS where the oil be be separated from the sand.

Yes; we are a major supplier of oil and gas to the USA.
No; we won't pull a HUGO CHAVEZ on you, at least in my life time.
You guys own most of the reserves as it is.

I think that the form of "socialism" that we practice would be acceptable to most US residents who must work for their livings. Health care is universal as is education.
We do pay into and receive a small retirement pension as well.
These are features of life in most other western countries.

I defy you to find any other socialist programs in Canada.

Thanks, though, for the kudos.

Uh, would those socialist programs include the pastors who have been jailed for speaking the truth from the pulpit?

Considering the fact that Socialism is a step closer to Communism and a Democracy is two steps farther away, I don't find your post to be all that comforting.

The Spiritual oppression in Canada is very evident. I feel it everytime I cross the boarder.

Thank God I live in a country that was founded on religious freedom!

Rob,
I am sort of with David on this one. As part of your history and ties with the UK, I am nervous that you will follow them with the 'over the edge' political correctness I am hearing over there.

The latest in the UK has been investigating priests and clergy who have been promoting Christianity openly and offending Muslims who claim it is hate speach - which I thought there was a state sponsored church there but may be wrong. This, coupled with the fear of offending anyone (there is a UK government site that describes what could be offensive to others and how to modify your behavior), it seems that they are more and more repressing the rights of all to eliminate offending one or two. Even the case of the hight school student who had to go to court because she didn't want to work with people who could not speak English and feared that she would not get a good grade because of it.

As much as I really like Canada and the UK, I don't want to see their cultures destroyed from within by fear of offending anyone.

Greg: The "ties" with the UK are non-existant today. Our political system (parliament) is based on theirs but it is completely Canadian.
The Queen is "head of state" but not because she is Queen of England.
The Canadian Constitution was patriated(sp). We have no constitutional ties with Britain. The British Commonwealth is just a shell.
Our economic ties are with the USA first and foremost.

We have not had the out-pouring of sensitivity that has been seen there. We allow cultures to flourish as they will but because of the British North America Act French and English have supremacy.
French is a fact in Quebec and in New Brunswick. There are pockets of French in Manitoba and Ontario.

David did, however, levy a serious charge of religious intolerence against Canada. That is not the Canada I have lived in and that I am proud to be a citizen of for over 50 years.

This Forum is not the place for further discussions of this nature. I will be more than pleased to continue in the "private message" format.

I must add; that although I am a proud Canadian, I am also well aware of the benefits to my country of living next to yours. I am saddened by the coolness I see developing between our countries and hope that we can understand each other better to our mutual benefit.

Rob,
The coolness is much deeper in my opinion then most Canadians realize. It will take decades to repair years of trade disputes, border security issues and poor foreign policy.
