Brand new to expedite/ looking to hire driver what is a fair pay?

Welcome to the forums. Are you looking to put a driver in a truck that you own? Are you looking for a team? Is your truck leased on with one of the expedited carriers?

Great thread. May help me make up my mind to move from semi to expediter. My thought, not knowing anything, solo driver gets 45% of NET or 38% of GROSS. Curious to see how close I am when the experienced post.

Though there are variations the two most common ones are.
40/60 Driver gets 40% of load pay and 100% of extras like layover hand unload detention etc. Owner would get fuel surcharge, owner pays fuel.
60/40 Driver gets 60% of load 100% all extras including fuel surcharge and pays for fuel.
In either case the driver normally pays workman's comp owner pays qaullcom and insurance.

Do you have a contract (A contract between you and the driver) ready for your new driver?
Read as many back posts as possible on the subject. Talk to other van owners and decided it there is enough money out there for both you, and your driver, to make money.
Don't even dream of taking on a driver without. Yes, there are some who have done just fine without contracts, BUT, it is by far the best way to protect both you and who ever drives for you.

Who pays for repairs? Is it a bare bones van or is it set up for a driver to live in weeks at a time?
Crunch the numbers real close...there is NOT a lot of profit for an owner in a CV.....
This option is probably best all around as you won't be squabbling about the driver deadheading home or moving locations...

another good place to start is by calling A-Blair out of Louisville, K.Y.
they have a few Sprinters owners that hire Co Drivers, and keep those Sprinters Teams Moving well @ a slightly lower rates. problem is, they also get a lot of good paying 4 skids loads, so there's not much room to live in.
Just call them and ask to speak with some of the Sprinters owners, they can fax you a contract and a business plan. i do not know if they run Van's.

I would recomend An O/O Subcontractor thier own authority, vehicle, fuel, insurances, etc. You keep 20% of the gross for your time, energy, and hopefuly verry little agrivation. You pay the driver 80% all in plus F.S.C. and extras. Have a contract that is fair but still in your favor if they screw up. Also, if its not a good match or there is a problem, its easier to part ways for both of you.
Now, you need to make sure you have steady good paying work because, if you treat and pay an O/O right he or she will drive for you, be loyal to you, not steel your customers, and you both can make good money. If they want to play they should have skin in the game at least a vehicle and insurance authority your judgement call.
Personaly, I wouldnt want to worry abbout anyone driving my vehicles for liability reasons. If they totaly destroy my vehical, or, decides to desert it because the driver decides he has a problem with me and / or wants to screw me over. the only way I would consider this is if they were to have 100% liability and responsiability for the van / truck and do some kind of pay down on the unit like they will own it in three months.

Are you implying you are about to 'release' an unknown driver in a vehicle you own when neither you nor your husband have ANY experience with expediting??
