I was in Best Buy and they had the Garmin GPS V on sale at $249 and a 10% off coupon for it. It's not what I ultimately want but not bad for under $250 tax included. The drawbacks are limited memory and serial port transfer only. I looked at putting the Chicago and Detroit areas into it and there isn't enough memory for both complete areas. I also don't have a serial port on my notebook so I'll have to get a serial/USB adapter. Garmin tells me they are about 85% effective and they have no clue why the other 15% don't work. Their answer is it's a hardware problem with the computer of course.
It's a nice unit. It tells you your direction of travel and what roadway you are on. It also tells you how far to the next exit, what exit it is and what towns it serves. It doesn't have any voice capability so you have to look at it but the display is good. It has a very good screen light that is very even. It's a much better unit than their GPS III. I'd rather have a Magellan Roadmate 700 or Garmin 2620 but until those are feasible this is a good unit. I recommend it to anyone looking for an inexpensive entry level unit.
