bought a gps and recommend it

I was in Best Buy and they had the Garmin GPS V on sale at $249 and a 10% off coupon for it. It's not what I ultimately want but not bad for under $250 tax included. The drawbacks are limited memory and serial port transfer only. I looked at putting the Chicago and Detroit areas into it and there isn't enough memory for both complete areas. I also don't have a serial port on my notebook so I'll have to get a serial/USB adapter. Garmin tells me they are about 85% effective and they have no clue why the other 15% don't work. Their answer is it's a hardware problem with the computer of course.

It's a nice unit. It tells you your direction of travel and what roadway you are on. It also tells you how far to the next exit, what exit it is and what towns it serves. It doesn't have any voice capability so you have to look at it but the display is good. It has a very good screen light that is very even. It's a much better unit than their GPS III. I'd rather have a Magellan Roadmate 700 or Garmin 2620 but until those are feasible this is a good unit. I recommend it to anyone looking for an inexpensive entry level unit.

The draw back is memory, just as you said. Spend more get more, at least in this application. Thanks for the report, you did the unit proud! I've seen the same unit work and it is pretty amazing.

The link doesn't work however the title gives an idea. Yes, this does more than tell which way you are going and what road you are on. You can download complete details of any portion of the country in it and have turn by turn directions to a destination. The downside is limited memory capacity however since it costs about 1/4 as much as those with the entire country installed it's a good system for someone on a budget.

I have to agree with Truckerbuddy. This day and age most of us have a laptop. I went to Circuit City, and bought DeLorme Street Atlas, for $149.00 and I found that it works great. The only fall back I found was, it doesn't have truck routes. I only had it try to put me on one secondary road that wasn't for trucks in 14 months that I have used it. Give it a try. Drive Safely....Butch

Same thing with Streets and Trips on the truck routes. A friend of mine asked me for directions and I put him in front of a mill operation with a grain elevator that was only about 10 feet off the road causing him to have to back up a pretty significant distance. I couldn't get him to admit what kind of names he might have been calling me while he was backing up.

they make a palm pilot called IQUE that has a option for truck routes but we have to look at our route before you drive so you can look at other roads that might be a bit longer but better for trucks plus with the street and trips software you can always refresh the route and it will give you a new one. i know this is better then not using one or just using a map. just my 2 cents

For those of you who are pooping on the parade you are missing the point of the thread. It isn't about what's best or what is ultimately wanted. It's about a pretty decent solution at a pretty decent price.

It's great to go buy the Delorme unit for about $149 however you have to have a laptop up and running and visible from the driver's seat for it to actively route you. That takes another $249 or so for a Jotto desk or similar. It also puts your laptop in danger of cracked hinges etc. from being open while driving.

What I posted was a unit that's way better than nothing at all and was available at a price below $250 tax included and will give adequate service until something better can be obtained.

It works pretty well and for the money isn't bad, especially for someone who has nothing at all at the moment.
