This is an "Individual Mandate" that I can back...Oh and its on the STATE level...and totally as lawful as the mandate that everyone has to buy health insurance....

Bill would require all S.D. citizens to buy a gun | The Argus Leader | argusleader.com

Five South Dakota lawmakers have introduced legislation that would require any adult 21 or older to buy a firearm “sufficient to provide for their ordinary self-defense.”

The bill, which would take effect Jan. 1, 2012, would give people six months to acquire a firearm after turning 21. The provision does not apply to people who are barred from owning a firearm.

Nor does the measure specify what type of firearm. Instead, residents would pick one “suitable to their temperament, physical capacity, and preference.”

The measure is known as an act “to provide for an individual mandate to adult citizens to provide for the self defense of themselves and others.”

Rep. Hal Wick, R-Sioux Falls, is sponsoring the bill and knows it will be killed. But he said he is introducing it to prove a point that the federal health care reform mandate passed last year is unconstitutional.

“Do I or the other cosponsors believe that the State of South Dakota can require citizens to buy firearms? Of course not. But at the same time, we do not believe the federal government can order every citizen to buy health insurance,” he said.

This sounds like Kennesaw, GA. to some degree. I imagine it will be "enforced" similarly. Good for them.

Well, if I lived there I would not have any additional expense for this one. GOOD LAW!! Keep the crime low that way.

Kennesaw passed their law as a response to the fools in Morton Grove, IL. who passed a law banning all firearms. The crime rate in Morton Grove went up about 70% and the crime rate in Kennesaw went down about the same amount. It has remained at that low level at least a quarter century. They don't enforce it at all in Kennesaw but the criminals don't know which citizens obey the law so they stay away.

Like the "gag" sign I have seen in some windows: "This home is defended by a .357 4 days a week"

SD also has an Immigration bill on the table that would require proof of being here legally as part of the normal law enforcement...everyone would be required to comply...no profiling that way...the one mistake Arizona made was give the officer the discretion to make the call...

Congrats to you and your church for stepping up and getting your permits. I have mine and when im home I carry mine. Just imagine if 1 person from each school or church where shooting attacks start could of stopped the gunman from killing others where would we be?

For example. If a teacher had a gun that day at Columbine or Virginia Tech and could stop the guys who were shooting up the place think of the lives and the injured people that could of walked away that day in stead of dieing or leaving the school with a gun shot wound. In my opinion alot of lives can be saved by a person with a concealed carry permit and properly trained with the firearm that the person chooses to carry. All these gun free zones are killing spree's for mass murderers to prey on the people. All these gun free zones are good for one thing and that is taking the law abiding citizen's right to bare arms away and leaving them helpless to these gunmen.

I live in Georgia and Georgia State had a law saying a person couldnt carry a concealed weapon at a public gathering. Well public gatherings could be at a convenience store, McDonalds, or a local sporting arena. Well thanks to the good people of Georgia stepping up and the governor signing SB308 it basically says you can not carry it inside a federal or state building or parking lot. You can carry it to a school to pick up your child but you can not leave your car if you have a weapons permit. Also now you can carry it into a sporting arena as long as it isnt a school function. You can now carry it into a church or bar with the owners written permission. I dont agree the law should of passed to carry a gun into a bar but they thought it was a good idea .
