"Well, if I knew what I know now. How this country treats vets...."
That's actually one of the big reasons behind all this. If everyone knew what it was like,... it's like walking a mile in a dispatcher's shoes, or a dispatcher having to drive a truck, kind a thing. Once you know what it's about, then you won't be as quick to treat a vet like some do, since we'd all be vets. I truly think it's one thing that will unite us in a commonality like no other.
I was at an age where they had just abolished the draft, and before they started requiring people to register. There was a few years there in between the two and I missed it all around, so I was never susceptible to the draft, nor did I ever have to register. Right after high school, though, I did audition for, and was accepted into, the Navy Band. Right after that I was offered a full-ride scholarship, so I took it. Sometimes I wish I'd gone into Basic and then into the Navy, just so that I could have served. Granted, I've done my bit for King and Country in a couple of other ways, no less important, but it's not the same.
Honestly, I've never heard this discussed by anyone before, not that I think I'm the first to come up with it, and the time to implement it may be way long gone, I dunno.
