ATF criticizes Democrats for taxing veterans' medical devicesIn conjunction with the recently celebrated Independence Day the nonprofit Americans for Tax Reform (ATF) blasted the Obama administration for promoting policies that impose higher taxes on America’s 22 million veterans.

As they were preparing for the long July 4 weekend, Americans were reminded that the healthcare reform bill passed by Congress and signed into law by President Obama in late March contains a new tax on medical devices such as prosthetic limbs, pacemakers and wheelchairs.

In fact, Democrats in the Senate rejected an amendment to the bill proposed by Senator Orrin Hatch (R-Utah) that would have prevented veterans covered by the Veterans Healthcare Program or TRICARE for Life from having to pay this tax.

"Senate Democrats had the opportunity to exempt our veterans from Obamacare’s new tax [but] chose to side with the tax-and-spend crowd in Washington over our wounded warriors," said Grover Norquist, president of ATF.

"This is one of the many reasons Harry Reid (D-Nev.) and the Democrats did not want Americans to read the 2,500 page healthcare bill before it was passed," he added.

The ATF noted that in addition to 54 Democrats, Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) also voted in support of the measure.

Sorry OVM, everyone should be taxed, including vets.

Why?

Because until we are a country that refuses to tax people who are in the service on their income, then everyone should pay their fair share. NO one should be exempt until we grow up.

NO TAXES ON DEVICES THAT WERE EARNED IN COMBAT!! EARNED IN THE LINE OF DUTY!! WANT FREE STUFF? GO OUT AND EARN LIKE THEY DID!!

What do you mean not taxing those in service? Where did THAT come from? ONLY troops in combat zones are not taxed. ALL other active duty service members pay taxes. I paid taxes and SS on every penny (all 3 of them) that I earned during my 3 years in the Army. My son pays taxes, my nephew and his wife pay taxes.

Start taxing bums, hookers, pimps, welfare rangers, medicade mammas, drug dealers and the REST of the 40% who PAY NOTHING!!!

I don't think Vets should be taxed..it should be included in their VA pension...they lose a limb in combat, they get a free prostetic but you say they should pay the tax on it? NO...they gave enough...

VA pension? What VA pension? Only 100% disabled vets and retirees get a pension. It is taxed.

well whatever you call it....do you think they should pay tax on the artificial limbs and what not??

No WAY should they be paying taxes on devices used due to injuries received in the line of duty, combat or otherwise. We treat our vets like crap. Just read what was done to cash strapped WWI vets in '32.

I might have got the 100% thing wrong. They MAY get a pension starting at 30% disablility. Not sure if disability pension is taxed, retirement is.

The VAST majority of vets get NOTHING for their service after they get out. Only the pay while in and a few things like tuition assitance etc. There is NO pension. In cases of EXTREME poverty they can get $100 per month. I watched a WWII vet not long ago be told that at the Vets center.

Well see here is the thing, no one thinks about it in the general public. Most don't know what's going on, others loath the military and then there are some who think it is all right.

I feel that no military person should be taxed for any reason.

This means if you join and serve for 3 years, not one dime is taxed on the money you make for that three years. If you make it a career out of it, then you pay not one dime on the money you make during that time.

Your medical care, retirement, pension - all tax free 100%. If you open a retirement account, all the money that is derived from that account - tax free. Investments, everything for that matter - tax free.

To tax defenders of this country is childish, stupid and the people should be ashamed of themselves. But again we have a population who don't know there is a war going on. For that matter, we don't even treat treasonous acts against the country seriously anymore.

Greg, I was NOT ranting at you, just RANTING over the treatment of our military/intell people by this government and so many in this Nation who GLADLY accept the freedoms that they protect but were not willing to protect them themselves.

Then, to have the AUDACITY, to slam, ridicule, slander, liable, or otherwise belittle their efforts when it quite clear that they "just ain't got a clue" what is going on in the REAL world is just sicking.
