ATF criticizes Democrats for taxing veterans' medical devicesIn conjunction with the recently celebrated Independence Day the nonprofit Americans for Tax Reform (ATF) blasted the Obama administration for promoting policies that impose higher taxes on America’s 22 million veterans.
As they were preparing for the long July 4 weekend, Americans were reminded that the healthcare reform bill passed by Congress and signed into law by President Obama in late March contains a new tax on medical devices such as prosthetic limbs, pacemakers and wheelchairs.
In fact, Democrats in the Senate rejected an amendment to the bill proposed by Senator Orrin Hatch (R-Utah) that would have prevented veterans covered by the Veterans Healthcare Program or TRICARE for Life from having to pay this tax.
"Senate Democrats had the opportunity to exempt our veterans from Obamacare’s new tax [but] chose to side with the tax-and-spend crowd in Washington over our wounded warriors," said Grover Norquist, president of ATF.
"This is one of the many reasons Harry Reid (D-Nev.) and the Democrats did not want Americans to read the 2,500 page healthcare bill before it was passed," he added.
The ATF noted that in addition to 54 Democrats, Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) also voted in support of the measure.
