Do you think is hump year? You've made it now...you have your system, you are working the system, the truck is set-up, the PM is all scheduled, bills are paid....you have your fishing holes for loads when times are tight...

Not sure if this is hump year for me. I've got some cash saved up, I'm thinking about buying a mountain bike and a camera so that I can do something besides sit in the van or in the driver's lounge. I'm waiting though to see how the rest of the month turns out.

Hump year?

Not sure I understand, but as long as there is freight to haul, I'm hauling it!

I have only been out here 2 years and after reading how expediting was 8 or 10 years ago, the old days of 1.30 or more a mile for a cv are not coming back. When ur gross income in this business is large, u really on get 1/2 of it in ur pocket after expenses. If it works for u thats fine. U see the countryside and go places u would never have gone if u worked at factory job. The freedom is great IMHO and the job can be rewarding, but if ur gonna raise a family of 4 on cv pay, IMHO its not gonna happen or if u are doing that now, its gotta be tough.:D

If u have any money saved up and can retire and are not tied down, check out the Philippines, u can live well on a 1000 bucks a month USD, u cant do that in the States.

Thru a chain of fortunate events..I have no mortgage, no truck payment, no children to support.....IMO...It is NOT doable in at CV pay...nope not at all....you can hope and wish and wait for things to get better, but it'll be like sloooooow quicksand...

That time is different for everyone out here. no one should even attempt to support a household and the expenses of running a business on the revenue of a CV...there has to be additional income into the home for that...

For me, there wasn't really a "hump" yr as you put it...i came in retired with a income and an additional income from my wife also...I was good to go from day 1 so to say...but I didn't get into this or any business just to "exchange" money...if any business can't be profitable, then there comes a time when you cut your losses and move on....

Up until this yr, my business was debt free for the most part, but then I made the decision to buy the Cargo Max and have a payment....yea the profit is no lower then when there was no payment, but the new bigger truck makes up for most of that loss and then some..and then there are the benefits that Skyraider spoke of...and for me, those out weight the money part..

The biggest thing for me is I really enjoy what i do, and thats worth more then making a huge profit and it also makes it real easy to be out here...

There was a point where the bills were paid and there was an ILLUSION of making money..but all the while the balance was creeping up on the charge cards...it was touch and go for awhile...my PM started to pay off as the truck payment was gone and we regrouped and cut everything not needed...like 120 channels...then selling our condo in Canada which had real good equity..enough to buy cash for South Dakota and buy the Sprinter and pay off some cards...just thru hard work, determination and some ole fashion luck thrown in...

It is all good now....:D

And JuJu of course...my ROCK...she really dug in, worked hard to support my efforts and turned it into OUR efforts...It is the American way!! ;)

Absolutely...I posted on FB last week about how much I love what I do..and then added a thanks to my wife...without her support and her keeping things in line at home, I wouldn't be out on the road..So yes I totally understand your reliance on Juju...

For any "newbies" that might be reading this, if you are married and have kids, being out here can be hard enough, but without the support of your wife, and family, chances are you won't make it...or you won't be married much longer...either way, it ain't worth it...

Not going to happen.
Ya can't even double dog dare me to do it. :D

Kind of arrogant don't you think? Someone would have to want to see the photos of you in a compromising position to dare you let alone double dog dare you. Somebody has a pretty high opinion of themselves. :D

A very important part of any small business owners plan, is to have a CALANDER .
for expedite, you cut it to 4 quarters.
you will need to use your best judgments, and mark expedite freight cycle. and be out there to haul the freight when it is run time.
you then sit down with your family, and mark all the days you HAVE to be home.(anniversary's, hollydays, graduations Ext.)
then you mark the days you WISH to be home or elsewhere.
next you will have to consult your family and deiced how many nights you wish to be out. verse the expected income for the quarter and for the year.
when it is all said and done, you will have REALISTIC goals, and a plan to achieve them.
follow your plan, monitor your progress, and hump days will come.
good luck.
