Prisoners wrongly received stimulus checks

The U.S. government mistakenly sent 1,700 inmates stimulus checks totaling $425,000, the Social Security Administration said Tuesday.

Fox News reported Social Security spokesman Dan Moraski told the broadcaster in a written statement the checks were sent out because official records "did not accurately reflect that they were in prison." Most of the inmate payments have been returned by correctional institutions, he said, though he wouldn't disclose how much.

Fox said the SSA inspector general's office is looking at the error as part of a broader audit of stimulus spending.

The Social Security Administration conceded the error involving 1,700 prisoners after a report that nearly two dozen Massachusetts inmates had mistakenly received the $250 checks.

The Massachusetts report evoked complaints from Republicans critical of the $787 billion stimulus program and the way it has been administered, Fox said, even before the wider problem was discovered.

Some inmates were legally eligible for the $250 stimulus checks because under the law the checks were to be sent to those receiving benefits from Social Security, the Department of Veterans Affairs or the Railroad Retirement board between last November and January, Fox said. Those not incarcerated between those dates legally received stimulus checks.

Moraski told Fox a total of 3,900 inmates not receiving benefits were sent a check, but 2,200 were due the payment because they were out of prison late last year. The other 1,700 were mistakenly sent checks.

The spokesman said the number sent in error was "relatively small" -- 52 million total payments were made -- and that most of the erroneous payments have been returned by penal institutions.

Actually Chef, if anyone looks at how the NEA is run, that is the best example of how our money is wasted. It is amazing what projects get picked and who gets paid for what is considered ART.

We are all artist and we should be treated as such or no one should be treated special. So what makes others so special that they can produce sometime what the public considers rubbish with money that is taken from hard working people who are also artists? Maybe we need to create a special tax for Hollywood and "artists" in general to subsidize the NEA?

From Mona Lisa Smile;
Katherine Watson: 25 years ago, someone thought this was brilliant. (A picture of a cow in a field drawn by a child is on the screen)

Betty Warren: Who?

Katherine Watson: My mother. I painted it for her birthday. Next slide. This is my mom. Is it art?

Susan Delacorte: It's a snapshot.

Katherine Watson: If I told you Ansel Adams had taken it, would that make a difference?

Betty Warren: Art isn't art until someone says it is.

Katherine Watson: It's art!

Betty Warren: The right people.

Betty Warren: And who are they?

Giselle Levy: Betty Warren! We're so lucky we have one of them right here.

Well I feel that there will be a health care reform in the same form of other programs based on real reasoning.

What I mean is reading the book about the UK health system there is a little known issue about class and how class fits into their program. They take in account life styles in how they determine one's limitations on health care. Most over there accept the class differences as normal, and even in health care where many don't care.

Here I am seeing a big difference or better put a more distinct difference between the different groups. Some of it goes right along racial lines while other goes along the lines that seem to be forged in the past, the rich v. poor and so on. I know that Obama is more of an elitist than marxist, that shows by his actions and opposing words but irregardless the problem is that his kind, the politician, has had disdain for the people for a long time and it does go back to Wilson (yes Wilson) and the path they took.

Now if you don't believe me, just look at our elected elite. they get the best of everything, but that wasn't the way it was setup. These guys and gals were not to be our royalty but below us in many ways. they were not to hold power but we were. We handed them the power and like everything else, they will create a health care reform that will have to take in account life styles and class. The poor people have shorter life span compared to the 'artist' so as an artist he/she has just a little more to get to survive and provide society.

The Wilson connection is very real. I think you could call him the one that really brought the Progressive movement into political play.....

I have no doubt we will see healthcare reform and i'll also say that it is needed...but not what barry is trying to run on us. Yes he is trying to divide us along lines and is doing very well at achiving it, not just in the healthcare issue but as a nation as a whole and yes it is racial , haves and have nots, rich and poor...but thatis his plan all along to simply control the populace.

He set out to control the banks and wall st even before he was elected that was his plan..as was taking over healthcare...the auto industry was a bonus...he wants to control the country financially and then control the monetary system to the point of sharing the wealth as to how much each has....so yes the will be healthcare reform along class lines and it will be the lead in to controling all other aspects......

Hmm somebody's been listening to a little too much Glenn Beck....

Letzrock,
Yep you do, don't you? because I don't. He has departed from the reality of this world and took another path that really needs to be redirected.

Wilson with me goes back to the early 80's, not recently. The TR puzzle piece didn't get put into place until recently though.
