Just curious on how 2012 is treating everyone compared to 2010,,I was out on the road in 2010 and did very well but had to return to my pizza place early 2011 and have decided that I may want to get out of pizza business and get back out on the road..I am especially interested in CV's. I own my Van and ready to go,

Hard to tell with me...2 different carriers....what I have noticed and maybe its just me IMO there seems to be almost no difference between say Jan. as compared April...it is more consistent. Years ago you could see clearly the seasonal busy, not so much anymore...

I have a Sprinter 170wb extended van. I did very well in 2010 and 2011 but this year I'm not doing well at all so far. I'm not sure why. The economy is supposed to be better this year but all the expeditors that I know personally aren't doing well.

Anymore It just depends on the carrier when it comes to CV's...More and more of the Midsize to larger carriers won't even consider signing them on....Sprinter size units are becoming the "norm" when a load is bid or a customer calls..."I need a sprinter or load requiers a sprinter" when in actuallity, alot of those loads wii still go in a CV..... The load i am running right now, is 86x45x9 and weights 39 lbs...I am hauling it from Toledo, Oh to Seattle, Wa....the customer requested a sprinter....and pd a higher rate....

There will always be CV freight, its just that the client base is drying up....Find the right carrier that still has a good base, and you can still do ok...as good as 2010?? Depends on the carrier more then it ever has....

Now if you are talking a Sprinter or liked unit, forget all the above, 2010 was great and 2011 is starting out better...But then again, that to depends on the carrier..we don't run cheap...:D

I have found positioning is everything....cover as many markets as you can...don't get too far off the beaten track....don't be hanging too far out there, don't waste a lot of time and "hope" for a load....a CV has more flexibility cost wise to move..use that advantage. Don't be afraid to move if that is what is required. Being stubborn will be your worst enemy.
Keep in mind...it is YOU that got you out in BFE, NOT the carrier, YOU had the option to turn it down...YOU can not blame the carrier for that. It is their job to offer, yours to decline or accept. Make good decisions....

More competition than 2 years ago.

I personally dont see that..we are seeing less and less CV's all the time...yea you still see the "Cats" all over, but when you talk to them, they are not getting the freight as they use to..and the Fed with their 2 skid limit really appears to be playing favs with their ST's...Load 1 and others won't sign CV's anymore and you are simply seeing more and more sprinter sized and SRW Cubes that at anytime....the CV segment just isn't as popular as it once was...

I've never driven anything smaller than a D. I consider anything smaller than a C a "Van." If you take all cv,sprinters, cube vans, cargo maxes, etc wouldn't you say that segment has over capacity ?

Yes...there are tons of one person operations out there....each taking a bite of the pie...

Yes, IF you lump them all together...but if you read the post, he is concerned with the CV...and while they are still here, they are a falling number...more and more of the mid size on up carriers are not signing them...take a look at the big "expediter" TS's...lookk at the "front" parking lots, they are populated with "sprinters", cubes and those types of units....

This business is all about knowing what you are doing, making smart decisions and doing it with they right carrier more then anything....I personally could add another Cargo Max type unit with Load 1 and that truck would run real good numbers...but i wouldn't touch a CV..the competition doesn't bother me 1 way or the other, i'll be here long after most of them have quit..I have already proven that in just 5 yrs...and not bragging a bit, but i was told that i was getting into this business at the worse time, no freight, cheap freight, too many CV's...welll iam here to say, I do pretty good out here..LOL, id match my numbers with alot of solo ST's...but again, i wouldnt touch a CV , even as their numbers drop...

The OP was asking about CV's...as he stated, he owns one and it is ready to go...he isn't going to get "sprinter" freight...and as the number of CV's go down, he will me in a "make or break" situation...Even talking to the smaller carriers like "Blizzard" here on EO...he is getting out of that market segment all together...in the not to distant future, you are going to need to be with the right carrier and be running a larger than a CV unit...

Thanks for the reply everyone, Here is what I was thinking of doing.
Run the van for about a year and then hopefully the new ford vans will be out,But either way I do plan on moving up to a sprinter type vehicle.

You are experience in the business and that gives you an advantage coming back in...You can do ok in a CV..and for a year you should be fine...but again in that segment of the market, the carrier you least to needs to be the top concern...Depending on when you are looking to make this move, I'd do EVERYTHING I could to get to the EXPO and talk to CV O/O /Drivers and Recruiters....If you move on this before then, personally I'd talk to Anne at Bolt....

2010 was a decent year. Comparing to 2012 at this point is about a draw. Revenue is considerably higher but equipment and fuel costs burn the difference pretty quick. This is just looking at straight trucks. Still should be a pretty good year unless the Panther sale throws a wrench in there.
