My family doctor recently told me that new BP quidelines will allow a maximum of only 140/90 to pass DOT physical. Any one else aware of this?

    Deadhead miles..AAAHHHH!!!

Overall, 30 percent deadhead seems to be fairly typical, based on what others have previously posted.

Maximum Legal Length for a Straight Truck

Looking through some used truck adds the other day, I noticed one for a 10-wheel straight truck that listed the total length as 44 feet 10 inches. I thought the maximum length for a straight truck was 40 feet. Has this been increased to 45 feet?

    Fedx CC Observaions on Driving

I believe the trucking companies that use these spotter services get a small reduction in their insurance costs. Also, the reports would be good to show that the company is taking steps "above and beyond" the minimum required in a safety audit. A lot of your chemical tank cariers use these...

    Fedx CC Observaions on Driving

Typically, these safety services will have contracts with several major trucking companies. Generally, the reports they generate are positive and accurate. With insuance costs so high, believe we may see more of this in the future.

    West Coast expediting

Very true on the undeveloped Western market. I lived in Tucson for a number of years and in many cases the company would either rent a 6-wheel Ryder truck and make the last minute delivery themselves or pay the cost of an 18-wheeler for a few thousand ponds.

    B Unit

A lot of people are retiring early for the first time and then working part time for several years. I've never worked directly in expediting; however, I've worked part-time on weekends pulling a chemical tank for the last 20 years, in addition to my regular job. It's worked nicely in that the...

    B Unit

I'm also anticipating retiring within a year and have looked at a couple of dedicated parcel routes where you would work just for one company and transfer between their various locations at night. The better of the two I looked at would have provided an income of 65 cents per mile (cpm). I...

    Chevy Express Van

I had a 3/4 ton, 1988 Chevy van that developed a similar vibration. After replacing the u-joints, balancing tires, and etc., the problem turned out to be the "swing bearing". The swing bearing is mounted in a frame cross member and serves to connect the front and back sections of the drive...

    deadhead

Most folks who have posted their typical deadhead miles seem to be quite consistent and between 30 and 35 percent of total miles operated in a year. Even though this sounds like a lot, the numbers I've seen have all been in this range.

    Dedicated Parcel Route

An update--the older gentleman that now does this run decided to wait on retiring; thus, the bank will keep doing it in house. I appreciate the excellent input I got on this. One additional interesting note, the bank had trouble putting a replacemnt value on the legal papers, computer discs...

    GMC and Chevy Vans

10-4 on keeping the tank as full as possible. The greater submergence depth also reduces the load on the fuel pump.

    Empty miles

My cousin operates a "D" unit and he figures on about one-third or 33 percent deadhead. Interesting to see how close that is to Rich's estimate.

    NEED INFO ON LANDSTAR

No question about the agents having their own trucks. One agent in Jackson even ran an add in the paper specifically stating that you could make an excellent income driving his truck!! It appears that some of the agents will work together to load each others trucks; thus, forming a mini...

    Revenue For A Cargo Van???

I'm not an experienced expediter; however, other folks here have been kind enough to send me some typical figures on van revenue. It appears that a range of 50 to 70 cents per mile (cpm), with an average of 60 cpm should be a good estimate for all miles operated.

    Money Queston

The 62 cpm that I was using actually came from the banks estimate of what it is costing them to do the route. This is an "out-and-back" and I live just 6 miles form the start; thus, there is almost no dead head. I believe the 34.5 cpm deduction is generous for a van. If anything, I tried to...

    Dedicated Parcel Route

Thanks for the responses. The 62 cpm is what the bank claims as the cost of doing the route themselves. They really want to get someone to contract it if the cost is not siginiciantly higher. I'm tempted to propose something just under 70 cpm and accept 65 or better. This route is desirable...

    Dedicated Parcel Route

I'm an experienced tractor trailer driver nearing retirement and thinking about doing something similar to operating a "B" unit, except the van would be dedicated to one customer on a fixed route. The route would involve transporting legal papers, data on computer disks, etc between bank...

Used Truck Values? Is there a Web site?

RE: Used Truck Values? All good responses. Book values and asking prices of similar trucks will give you a range of values. Also, as with truck tractors, it seems there is some price variation from one part of the country to another.:+
