    Fuel surcharge cargo vans

The current f.s.c. at Panther for cargo vans is .16/mile. For most of 2014 it was .24/mile. In August it dropped to .23/mi. and continued to drop about a penny a month. Running a gasser the f.s.c. pays for all my loaded mile fuel costs and puts an extra 4 to 6 cents/mile in my pocket.

    Glass cleaner

I've been using Sprayway glass cleaner since high school graphic arts class. The formula 40 (orange can) works great for cleaning camera lenses, light tables, copy-boards etc. I still use it to clean my glasses. The general purpose (blue can) is good for windows. Costco sells the general...

Flat mileage fee vs % of Compensation

The rational behind fuel surcharges was to offset the volatile price swings of fuel. Carriers didn't want to constantly change their published tariffs every time some oily sheikh in the Mid East farted and the price of crude increased. So they invented the fsc. Shippers understood that and...

Flat mileage fee vs % of Compensation

I don't know who said "There is no profit in ethics", but I bet it was an accountant. Reminds me of when I first started hauling NLM loads. I took a 22% hit off my regular rate to haul their freight and put up with their crap, like no early pick-ups, early deliveries, etc. NLM demanded more...

Flat mileage fee vs % of Compensation

I'm amazed Panther hasn't gone this route. What a great way to skim extra profits off the fsc pool. I will have to bring this to their attention next time I'm in Pantherville.

    Buying vs Renting

Maybe one of these so called RV toy haulers would work for you. Gives you living quarters, space for your merchandise and no DOT hassles.

    Cargo Van Maintenance Costs Update

My pleasure. Define "life of vehicle". I stated the cost per mile as a little over .03/mi. for the first 792,000 miles. When I put a bullet in its head I'll post an update. The .19/mile was the cost for gasoline for the year 2014. Total cost per mile for gasoline up to and including this...

Flat mileage fee vs % of Compensation

Based on the limited info you provided how can we offer a meaningful opinion? We know that Carrier A pays .80/mile and extra for NYC and hazmat. Is there a fuel surcharge to go with the .80/mile? Do they pay deadhead to the shipper and/or empty moves? Carrier B pays a percentage. What is...
