Since you now mention you are going to San Francisco, may I suggest an alternative route? Just be sure you have plenty of fuel before leaving I-10! There are no services along this route, but it completly avoids LA and all that traffic. Also once it reaches I-15 by Hesperia, do NOT take 18...

I guess it would depend on where you figured to head north to I-40 .... I-10 the mileage is 2418, it is 100 miles farther if you go to Phoenix and cut up. If you go Shreveport, Dallas, Amarillo it is 2476 ..... but .. who would want to get into those mountains in unsettled weather? Stay south...
