Questions concerning my entry into this biz

RichM I have the required insurance, 300,000 for the authority and 50,000 for cargo. 10,000 cargo is all the feds require for vans but I was told 50,000 would cover about anything i would be hauling. The 300,000 is for a 10,000 pound and under authority. My insurance costs about 190 dollars a...

Questions concerning my entry into this biz

To all who say this is not a part time business, you are wrong. I do this as a part time business and it works great. I have my own authority and a cargo van. I also do automotive bodywork and painting. Between the two I can make a real good living. Rushiton, it do not cost alot to get your own...

American Trucking Associations pushed HOS regs on

RE: American Trucking Associations pushed HOS regs Independent free from the influence or control of others. Not depending on another, esp. for financial support. Not connected with others; separate. Now you all have to get in line and follow your carriers rules.

    Why is nobody asking?

That is what I do. Just increase your rates to cover your added expenses. Most companys will not object to a modest rate increase if you take the time to explain why you are doing it.

    Authority

You will need 300,000 primary liability and at least 10,000 cargo insurance. I have 300,000 and 50,000 cargo and I pay about 200 a month. I run older window vans so I just carry the primary liability. Once you have your own authority you can go directly to manufactoring companys or anywhere...

    Under 10,001 Q's

You do not need a dot number for 10,000 pounds or under. Your insurance will need to be 750,000 instead of 300,000 if you want a dot number. Use a service like Permits Plus to get your authority, it is money well spent. You will also need 10,000 dollars cargo insurance.

    Van (A-B unit) questions

bigjoep89 What your saying is that you can not just show 7 days off duty, right. You have to show your actual on duty hours for those 7 days.

    Cheap Freight

Everyone talks about cheap freight, but what is cheap freight? 1.00 per mile in a van, 90 cents, 80 cents, 70 cents. What about a straight truck? How about posting prices. I run a van and I go no less than 1.19 per loaded mile. Anything less than that I consider cheap freight.

    Van (A-B unit) questions

If you were running loads in your van you were not off duty. This is an area where even some DOT officers do not know what is right. This is an area that people running vans need to research. I could be wrong on this, but this is what I have been told.

    Van (A-B unit) questions

If you mark your log sheets as off duty and you were doing runs during that time then you are guilty of false log sheets. It applies even to vans. If you have an accident and those logs are checked and do not match your company records your in big trouble.

    Van (A-B unit) questions

cherri 1122 I think the officer was right. If you are going to do any logs you should log all the time. I was told the same thing by a DOT officer in Pa. One other thing, if you do not have company stickers all over the van you can bypass any scale and nobody cares.

The fsc money should go to the person paying for the fuel. That is only right, but legally Fedex CC is collecting the money and can do with it what they want. What they are doing is proping up there bottom line at your expense.

    Test your math skills

Fedex CC is a expediting company that has loads to be moved. They offer these loads to there leased O/O at a rate that they choose to pay. You as a O/O decide if you will run the load or not for what they will pay. They do not owe you an explanation of how they arrived at that rate. Any money...

    Test your math skills

Or could it be that this fair deal came about because Fedex CC had to lower costs to be competitive with other companys. Fedex CC appears to be a great company to work for, but without competitive rates there will be no runs. It seems that with more carriers out there the rates are going down.
