We conducted five face-to-face vendor meetings in all. We were particular in vendor selection, interviewing many and selecting a few. It also helps to know how to run a meeting.

    Good Health on the road?

When we drove a fleet owner's reefer truck, we used it as a climate-controlled gym for working out. That worked at truck stops where showers were available. We're not in a reefer truck now but will be soon - this time in a truck of our own. We plan to make physical fitness a top priority then...

    Patriot Act

I would not assume for a moment that threats to national security and our personal security come only from or even mostly from outside the borders of the U.S. The Oklahoma bombing was done by two died-in-the-wool U.S. citizens. In the 60's, a host of bombings and acts now referred to terrorist...

    A Little Help?

I received the following e-mail from an EO reader today. "I am an expediter wannabe. When you and everyone speaks of research, what exactly do you mean? I am currently finding the cost of health and insurance for a cargo/sprinter van, but what else do I need to know? What do I need to...

    cr vs d units

If you run with a carrier that has a lot of reefer freight the CR/D choice is not all that problematic. But if you are with a carrier that has only limited reefer freight CR may be the wrong way to go. If you are running for anyone other than FedEx Custom Critical White Glove Services, you might...

6 inches short of being dock high.

In the situation described, ramps would be the way I'd go were I in your shoes. You sometimes see ramps placed by shippers at their loading docks to accomodate non-dock-high trucks. It's a proven solution.

6 inches short of being dock high.

I thought about this a bit more overnight. Another point or two if I may. A mechanical device used to raise a truck to dock height should be extra-heavy-duty strong if it will be used to support a significant amount of weight. In determining the weight, don't forget to include any forklifts that...

    HAZMAT Debacle

Debacle is the right word! I hate seeing thousands upon thousands of truckers having to go through this for something that will provide little or no national security benefit. None of the 911 terrorists had pilot licenses, did they? If someone gets it in his head to use a HAZMAT truck to commit...

6 inches short of being dock high.

While it may be possible to create dolly legs or some similar configuration that would lift the truck to dock high, you should also consider the pounds per square inch that will build under the feet of those legs when deployed. The weight of the truck will be distributed over a very small area...
