Hi Bill, Age is not a factor in this business as long as health issues are under control. I recommend you read these forums and see what you think about the industry before you leap. Most of us are owner operators so we are self employed. We are leased to a carrier to get our loads and we...

New phone, new storm and yea - bad chicken, ooooooch

Been there, done that, and bought the T-shirt. At last count, I have been food poisoned at least four times. Twice in my truck, once on takeout at home, and once at a motel in Sault Ste Marie MI. The brighter side of these events is that you can expect to loose at least five pounds from the...

    Inhanced Drivers License

I was told that if you take your shoes off no-one will give you problems when you enter Kentucky.:D Has anyone here had any firsthand experience in using one of these enhanced licenses at border crossings?

    Inhanced Drivers License

The State of Michigan is sending out info in thier license renewal packets about a new enhanced license. The new license contains a microchip that will respond to a signal at the border and will allow you to enter and return from Canada and Mexico without a pasport. Has anyone tried this yet?

    Hometime parking

I had an agreement with a local businessman who owned a greenhouse and nursery. This type of business usually has space to spare and is a little safer invironment. I never had any problems with damage or theft. My D truck sorta fit in with his little fleet of box trucks and my pickup looked like...

    Million mile mark!

Driving in reverse should be a twofer and you can get a real clear view of where you have been too. What could be better?

    Million mile mark!

I have a million miles but I cheated. The first 830,000 came on the road as a field sales representative for 30 years. Yup, a traveling salesman. Save the traveling salesman jokes please. There was only about 500,000 as an expediter and less than 100,000 as a regular truck driver. I won't brag...

Who has it tougher and why?

I tried em all. I hated the semi and loved the comfort and convenience of the strait truck but I liked the Sprinter the most. It's just great to go anywhere you want when you are empty. I got to see a lot more of this country than I would have in any other sized vehicle and I made decent money...

Anone here drive a Ford E-350 Gasser?

Since I have retired I have been driving the very best kind of Ford E350,( someone elses), on local deivery routes of about 200 to 300 miles per day. I'm NOT a Ford guy but I'm fairly impressed. It's a 5.4 gas and has had minimal maintenance. It has 278,000 miles on it and burns no oil. The...

    Do you remember when

I remember "Tales of The Old West" hosted by Ronald Reagan, "Sea Hunt" with Lloyd Bridges, and lots of great old shows featuring great old dead guys. You could buy a hamburger, french fries, and a coke at the Golden Arches for $.90. What a deal. Cruise the loop and then stop by and have a burger...

    Places you wont stay

The TA in Wildwood Florida, in fact, anywhere in Wildwood Florida. There were lots of hookers and drug pushers openly working the lots last time I was there. The whole area had that nasty dangerous feel to it. Worse than Gary IN and that's saying something.

    changing carriers

I changed carriers once because of family pressures . They wanted me to be home more so I switched to a local courier. It was a big mistake. I changed once because I really liked the people who ran the company but the operations manager didn't seem to like me much so that was a mistake too. I...

    What is cheap freight??

Anything below .75 per mile in a van or Sprinter is cheap freight to me. I could afford to run for less and my break even was less but frankly I thought .80 was a fair rate for all concerned. It's not just whether or not you will break even or make a little money that's the real issue. What are...

Bravo To The Mom and Pop Companies

I always got the feeling that the big companies prefered the fleets over the individual owner operator. The single unit owner is just another driver and easily replaced. This theory seemed to apply double for the van and Sprinter guys. My preference was for the smaller carriers. It won't take...
