Your previous argument was that they have been prevented from marrying because of religion. In otherwords, "religion is bad". But that is the very thing they want to be a part of. Has nothing to do with whether they can or can't, it is the motivation. If you look at civil unions, it is the same...

That doesn't translate into them running at the same costs.They do have to comply but have some exemptions that aren't afforded to a US carrier.

Umm...not quite. Marriage is a religious ceremony. If they don't want or reject religion, then they should be fine with civil unions as that affords them the same rights and benefits as a married couple.
