    2k to 3000mi a weak lease

Same as van or Sprinter rates, depending on what you're hauling.

    Prestige Expedite

That's who I was leased to before starting my own company. Nothing bad to say about them. I learned a lot in the time I was there. They're like any company; they have their good and bad points but if you run smart you can make money.

    UPS.....We Have A Problem.....

You wouldn't have drivers deadheading out too fast before you can find a load.

And that low overhead is why some survived. (by the skin of our teeth)

    All State Express

The key is keeping the overhead at a minimum and providing good service and good communication with the customer. My goal is to keep overhead low enough to be able to bid competitively and still be able to pay drivers a rate equal to or better than what the larger carriers are paying, and to...

We do a lot of brokered freight and NLM is the only broker we deal with that separates the fuel out on the rate. All the other brokers want an all inclusive bid, so would it make sense as a carrier to place an all inclusive bid and then simply call some of the driver's pay a surcharge? Why not...

A van getting $1 or more on a load is not unheard of. Not too many are getting that every load leased on, but those rates do happen on occasion. Sometimes our van guys will get that if we're able to get enough on the load, which is usually loads that aren't originating in Michigan or Ohio...

making any cash in these little trucks?

Yep. Too many Rinos and not enough Dinos.

    All State Express

Bottom line is most van drivers are getting somewhere between .85 and .95 on most loads. That's the all inclusive rate with surcharge included. Our vans are getting in that range as well, depending on how much we get on the load, so I don't see a huge difference in pay rates when comparing...

NLM freight is just like any other freight. You can't blame them if it goes for cheap because all they do is throw it out there for people to bid on it. If your company only gets it for cheap they either have their tariffs too low or they're bidding too low because they think they'll only ever...

I've been running my butt off this week. Monday I went to the grocery store, yesterday to the Post Office and to Fed Ex Office to get another set of vehicle signs for a new driver, and this evening I may go to church.

Is Big Brother Going to Watch Truckers More and from a Distance??

It's all about what makes people feel good. Feelings are way more important than facts, right?

Re: More Van/expediting questions! You can't take any load offer without knowing the size of the load.

I was wondering who got that thing. My driver wasn't quite close enough to bid on it and it disappeared rather fast.

Of course it's the driver's and the carrier's fault. The four wheeler can do no wrong. It's always the truck's fault. Anyone knows that.

Some of this stuff is pretty scary for carriers our size. A couple bad drivers can really mess you up. Tearing down the owner/operator model is something I don't even want to think about. I guess some of the large truckload carriers would like that.

What are you going to do while you're trying to find those shippers? You'll have to do some brokered stuff to get the cash flow going unless you have good reserves to hold you over while you're building that customer base

    Home time?

Shippers don't post on load boards, just brokers. Fastrod deals with shippers and some of us use partner agreements and the internet, but you will see a lot more money working directly with shippers. That's our next goal is to get more direct customers and start doing more non brokered freight.
