Also, if you look on a map of Le Sueuer County Minnesota, right in the middle of the map is a town called Le Center.

I've sometimes thought Flushing, NY was a good idea.

    going independent

A few observations: Those vans that are grabbing loads from several carriers without their own authority aren't really independent in my book. They're still running freight under someone else's numbers. What precisely is the difference between a carrier and an independent? Absolutely...

    Negligence or cheating?

Call it what you will, but it's a good idea to always check the mileage yourself to see if the load is going to be profitable. We do a lot of loads out of New England and when one of them goes to Michigan, I always bid based on U.S. miles instead of routing through Canada and I always tell the...

How big of an inverter for a CV?

I was running a 1000 watt in my Sprinter when I was on the road and that worked pretty well. I had plugged into that thing a laptop, printer, alarm clock, florescent light, LCD TV, PS3, and various phone chargers. Occasionally I would turn off everything else and use a Foreman grill. I never...

    C/V's Dead?

Maybe I'm late to this discussion, but here's my two cents. The rates on van freight are down at the moment due to too many of them in service, but I don't think the van is dead. There is always going to be a market for the service a van can provide, especially if the FMCSA knocks the driving...

    Commercial Insurance Advice

Ditto. I've been with CIS for a while now and there really is no replacing people who understand our business, what filings need to be made, etc.

What do you eat if you need to drive all night?

Maybe there should be a topic for healthy ways to stay up all night. I've dropped about 15 pounds since I've been off the road and that's mostly due to not eating and drinking what I used to to keep me up all night. Another reason I had to quit driving was because once I got a decent number of...

    Cargo vans and sprinters....

We wil double dip if possible, but only if there is enough time to make both picks and drops on time.

    Cargo vans and sprinters....

I think the key to being able to pay vans more is running more straights. We still have mostly vans and need to make a certain margin off those units to make any money, but will get outbid at times by larger carriers who run the vans at next to no margin and bid under $1 a mile. Which brings...

We have a great sign on bonus program. Anyone who signs on and runs a load gets paid for that load.

    Day vs. Night

I was joking. I'm off the road now, so all the driving I do is during the day...grocery, post office, church, etc.

    Expedited load boards

The best thing to do is to get as many irons in the fire as you can. Get on all the usual boards and try to cultivate a customer base as well from the 3PLs and what not. It's basic math. The more freight you have access to see, the better chances you have of moving your vehicles.

You just illustrated my biggest one. Person is singular and their is plural. Now back to our regularly scheduled programming.
