Donald Trump Gives Aging a Bad Name
There is lots of talk about Trump's age as he turns 80 today. Let me begin my own with this quote. Notice it is not about Trump but anyone who is 80. The speaker makes a fair point, and Trump deserves that grace.
“'Somebody at 80 years old just doesn’t have the physical stamina, the mental stamina for that office,' said Rahm Emanuel, a prominent Democrat ... who has called for a mandatory retirement age of 75 for many top federal positions. Mr. Emanuel, who served as a chief of staff to President Barack Obama and a top aide to President Bill Clinton, said that the presidency is especially taxing.
“'It ages you in a way that no other stress in your life does,' he said." (

To be honest, I'm surprised Trump is still alive. He is 80, and obese. His diet and sleep patterns are terrible. In my experience, I can't remember knowing anyone who was both 80 and obese. Lots of people I know are over 80, but none of them have obesity like Trump.
The reason I say Trump gives Aging a bad name is because he is clearly in the aging-avoidance camp. Trump denies the effects of aging instead of acknowledging them. He gets treatment for his symptoms but he is not proactive in managing his health. He does not exercise (driving a golf card and taking a few steps to hit a golf ball is not exercise). He does not eat in a way that will prolong his life. As an ageing human being, Trump is a poor role model.
Contrast that to the 80+ year-olds we see in our gym. These folks enjoy their rigorous exercise several times a week. Even as they age, they show increases in their strength, stamina and balance. While time eventually takes its toll on every one of us, and while some people have genetic advantages, all of our gym octogenarians enjoy a far better quality of life than they otherwise would if they did not eat healthy and exercise.
Trump embodies the age-victim mindset. I'm getting older and there's nothing I can do about it. Aging is bad and I resist its effects by denying them as much as i can, and when forced t do so, having them treated by others.
Our gym members are the same age and subject to the same calendar but they feel better because they are not victims. They are proactive. They have learned what works. And they consistently put in the work to obtain the results they want.
The massive attention now given to Trump and ageing saddens me because there is a better way to age than what Trump is modelling, but because Trump gets the press he does, hundreds of millions of Americans are seeing the bad model, not the good one.
