Thinking of selling my house for an RV

As a spinoff from a recent thread, thought I'd post this.

Why does one really choose a more expensive way to maintain a home-twenty to call their own, when other comfortable and more economic options are available. Especially for those of us that see these more expensive, high maintenance options 4-6 times a year and only for a few days at a time? In our case an average of 320 days of a 365 day year is spent on the road away from home to make the big bucks. And to do what when you do come home, spend most of that time cleaning , repairing, etc. Why does one continue pay (as we do) for a lawn service to maintain a lawn they barely get to enjoy, pay utilities one rarely uses to keep the home powered up?

Like us, having a place of their own to call home is important to many, verses living in a motel or a room in a friend or family members home during off time. Especially when one (we) can afford their own residence instead. More and more the Luxury RV is becoming a viable option for people like us who's careers keep them (all) on the road away from their more expensive homes. Especially when retirement is still 10-15 years away and one is truly settled in their current job of choice. Plus unlike a fixed structure or mobile home the RV offers easy mobility, yet the same elegance as most higher end homes, but in a more compact, affordable space.

As A-Team and others on this forum have done, I think with the economy and real estate value being what it is today, dumping the elephant that isn't appreciating as it once did and if your lucky is worth what you owe the mortgager (many aren't even that lucky) is a serious consideration. Walk away from that huge profit you thought you were gonna get cause it ain't there and wont be for a while. Example: Quarter million dollar almost brand new home next door. Nice safe residential neighborhood. On market for over two years now. No buyers! Bank now owns.

So much for real estate investments. Not saying an RV is going up in value, in fact it is going to do the opposite. But the money one saves $350-550/mo payments plus $250-350/mo lot rent W/S/E/C-tv included, verses $550- 2500 mortgage and $200-400/mo utilities, etc allows for a nice chunk of change to be placed into investments etc that are far more beneficial than real estate you have to maintain right now. Food for thought.

In fact we went to an RV show not long ago to look at residential (full time living) Luxury Fifth Wheel coaches and were blown away with what can be bought with today's economy The coach we picked ( DRV [Doubletree RV] Mobile Suite) that sold new in 2008 for over 100K can be purchased in like new condition for less than 50K today. Not good for the seller but great for the buyer. Plus going into it knowing this "home" is not being bought as an investment to grow, depreciation is not as great of concern. But the monthly savings, ease of maintenance, freedom and ease to relocate at will, far out weight the losses on the initial investment. Anyway, I want a bigger RV than the one I'm driving now. :)

I guess it all depends on where you wish to park it. The RV park closet to where I live charges $715, PER MONTH! My house payment, everything included is under $1000. I would still have to pay for the camper, the utilities AND several storage sheds. It is all a matter of needs and lifestyles. There is no one answer that meets everyone's needs.

I like my little castle in the woods too much. Woke up this morning, started a pot of coffee, and watched 18 turkeys 40 feet from my patio.

No intent to ever sell. The house, simple as it is, represents way too much for my wife and I. In a very few short years, it will be paid for. I heat with wood, water comes from the well my bride and I drove ourselves, and when it's paid for, we're going off the grid. Yeah, I'm a hillbilly like that. The neighbors cut my weeds in exchange for unlimited use of our Kubota.

My taxes and insurance are way cheaper than any RV park rent.

On top of that, we're not driving forever. Oh, and I actually enjoy snow.

You are absolutely correct LS. Pulled up the attachment and nice resort. Nice, safe, decent clientele and staff, plus comparable facilities are available in areas conducive to the truckers needs and routing for half that price as we are learning in our research. Looking at the price you quoted would the savings be the deciding factor? Not so much. Your cost may be considerably lower than today's average homeowners.

It is a matter of personal taste, choice and life styles. I know that there a less expensive parks around the country. NO park, any where else in the country, has the fantastic walleye fishing AND layout hunting in it's back yard. Therefore, for MY needs, no other would work.

I work to pay for my fun and to enjoy my life. The "business" is NOT the goal, it is only a means to provide the goal. If I cannot walleye fish and layout hunt there is no point. That simple. Those are MY needs and wants. Not many people have those particular needs or wants. Just as few people in general have the same wants and needs as the next guy.

You are correct, it can be done. Without much difficulty. One can always do what one wants if they try. It is a wonderful life for those who want it.

BY the way, that park is quite nice. No problems with crime etc. It is just lacking in trees.

There is another one in Monroe, it has trees. I have NO idea what their rates are. It also floods. LOL!!

Where are you looking to park your rig?

& you don't even need a power unit.
Just call Horizon drive away,(or any other), they'll move it for you at a friction of a cost, if you'd like a new postcard on the windshield.there are also connectors to match your own rig 5th wheel.
i know one TN trucker that doing just that. moving his 5th wheel. every 6 months.
BTW, when shopping for an RV, it is a good practice to start with the floor plan, and work your way from there.
