CHICAGO (Reuters) – Passengers and crew on board a Chicago-bound flight on Sunday had to subdue a man who tried to open an emergency exit door mid-air, forcing the plane to make an unscheduled landing in St. Louis, authorities said.

No injuries were reported, and the unidentified 43-year-old man from suburban Chicago was taken into custody, they said.

The man tried to open the emergency door on Continental Airlines Flight 546, which originated in Houston and landed safely at about 1:30 p.m. in St. Louis, authorities said.

"Police officers boarded the plane and found the disruptive passenger on the floor near the front of the plane, being detained by a flight attendant and two passengers," said Lambert-St. Louis International Airport spokesman Jeff Lea.

The passenger had apparently left his seat during the flight, saying he had to get off the plane, Lea said.

He was being questioned and had not been charged, authorities said.

The FBI was working with airport officials to investigate what happened, said spokeswoman Rebecca Wu, who would not provide any details.

Aviation experts say it is very difficult, if not impossible, to open the doors of a commercial aircraft during flight because pressurization and the mechanical structure of the doors function to keep them sealed

SAN FRANCISCO — Flight attendants and passengers subdued an unruly passenger and put him in handcuffs as an American Airlines flight was approaching San Francisco, police said.

Sgt. Michael Rodrigues, of San Francisco police, said the passenger was banging on the ****pit door and shouting unintelligibly on Flight 1561 from Chicago when he was wrestled down and put in plastic handcuffs.

He said the Boeing 737 carrying 162 people landed safely at 9:10 p.m. at San Francisco International Airport where police arrested the man.

The suspect was identified as 28-year-old Rageit Almurisi. Rodriguez said he didn't know the man's nationality but he added that he was carrying a Yemen passport.

Almurisi faces federal charges of interfering with a flight crew. He was being held at San Mateo County Jail.
Story: Plane cleared to fly after 'security threat' in NM

The incident came after a Continental flight to Chicago was diverted in St. Louis after a passenger unsuccessfully tried to open a plane door Sunday.

On the same day, a Delta Air lines flight from Detroit to San Diego was diverted to Albuquerque, N.M., after the pilot told passengers that a note with the word "bomb" on it was found in one of the plane's bathrooms, according to one passenger.

I could not imagine, what you must have felt and thought that morning.:(
Kind of a confused shock, mostly. But we didn't get to see any of it it, really, like on the news and stuff, as we were in the middle of it, so to speak. It wasn't until several hours later when we found out what happened and what was going on. The night before 9/11 a friend a I had a late dinner at the restaurant on top of the WTC. The next morning we flew out of NYC around 8AM on a non-stop to Los Angeles. The flight was diverted to St Louis, where we then learned of what had happened.

Haven't been on a commercial flight since.

Oh, I know. Everything from being up there in the first place, knowing we were up there just a few short hours before it all happened, to knowing that our plane departed at roughly the same time of day as those others, who like us were also fully fueled for flights to Los Angeles (3 of the planes) and San Francisco (the other plane). The fact that those other planes departed from Boston (2), Washington and Newark is only marginally less unsettling than if all of those planes had departed from NYC.

It doesn't really bother me much anymore, but it used to whenever I happened to think about it, which was pretty much all the time there for a little while. I can only imagine what the people of lower Manhattan must think on a daily basis.
